This riverside village 1.5 hrs from Toronto is dotted with storybook shops and charming cafes, Life in canada

You don’t need to travel far from Toronto to find a little village that looks like it belongs in a storybook.

Just about 1.5 hours from the city, you’ll find a charming riverside community with historic buildings, cozy cafés, cute boutiques and scenic trails that wind along the water.

You can spend an afternoon wandering shop to shop, stopping for a baked treat and taking in the old-fashioned streetscape along the way.

St. Jacobs Village is a quaint gem located along the shores of the Conestoga River. It’s even been named the prettiest small town in Canada by Narcity readers, so you can expect major charm here.

The village dates back to the 1800s and has deep German and Mennonite roots, which can still be seen in its architecture, businesses and surrounding countryside.

According to the St. Jacobs Village website, the community is filled with “authentic sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and incredible one-of-a-kind shopping.”

Shopping is definitely one of the highlights. The village is lined with independent stores selling everything from clothing and vintage finds to home decor, art, gifts and locally made goods.

You can browse the village directory to see just how many small businesses are tucked along its streets.

One particularly unique stop is Hamel Brooms, which dates back to 1908 and is known as Canada’s last remaining corn broom manufacturer.

You can watch the traditional broom-making process inside the shop before browsing its collection of stained glass, home decor and other handcrafted treasures.

For something sweet, make your way to Stone Crock Bakery, where you can pick up fresh-baked goods, including its famous Dutch apple pie and butter tarts.

There are also several cafés and restaurants scattered throughout the village, so you can stop and grab a specialty drink or bite to eat.

Spots like EcoCafe, LenJo Bakes, St. Jacobs Grill, The Pub by Stone Crock, and Harvest Moon are among its food and drink stops.

If you’d like to spend some time in nature, the Conestoga River runs right alongside the community, with trails offering an easy way to get some fresh air and enjoy the scenery.

The Mill Race Trail is a 1.5-kilometre, mostly level trail that follows the mill race diversion of the river and offers an easy stroll.

There’s also the Health Valley Trail, which follows the Conestoga River from St. Jacobs toward Waterloo and passes through countryside and farm pasture.

Or, you can enjoy the self-guided St. Jacobs Art Walk, which highlights murals, sculptures and other creative installations around town.

For a different way to see the area, you can hop aboard the Waterloo Central Railway, a heritage train that travels between Waterloo, the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market, the village and Elmira.

The nearby St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market is another major draw, with vendors selling local food, handmade goods, art and plenty of unique finds.

If you’re planning a visit later in the year, the village also has several 2026 events on the calendar, including the Bales & Boots bluegrass celebration on September 26 and Pumpkin Palooza on October 24.

With its riverside setting, heritage buildings, shops and cozy cafés, it’s easy to see why Narcity readers have called St. Jacobs one of Canada’s prettiest small towns.
