This scenic park in Calgary pops with fall colours

27 September 20253 Mins Read

Carburn Park, tucked away in the Riverbend community in southwest Calgary, is one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

This park is popular amongst local residents and animals alike, even boasting spring deer and other wildlife lurking in the brambles.

Fall is one of the best seasonal times to visit, as the glass-like water of the main lake reflects brilliant fall colours from the nearby balsam poplar trees.

The park’s resident deer begin their breeding season in the last three weeks of November, so catching the falling leaves earlier in October is ideal.

While the park is picturesque all season long, you’re bound to catch a glimpse of nearby wildlife and take a few scenic pics at this local park during the autumn months.

An ecological haven

Carburn Park is an ecological haven nestled in the heart of the city. It’s a location frequented by birdwatchers, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

The park’s most prominent feature is the central lake and lagoon, which is a popular spot for river paddling in the summer and canoeing in the fall.

This is an especially scenic time of year for canoeing as the red, orange and gold leaves of the park’s trees are reflected in the lake’s glass-like waters.

Carburn Park also boasts some of the largest ponds in the Calgary Parks ecosystem, with a significant deciduous forest containing balsam poplar trees and American silverberry, saskatoon, choke cherry and Canada buffaloberry shrubs dotting its walking paths.

You can get lost in the shrubbery and brush trails at the centre of the park, and you may even run into a gentle deer or two during your walk.

Carburn Park’s main lake and many ponds are full of fish, which attracts lots of diverse birds to the area. Belted kingfishers and great blue herons can be spotted fishing in the late summer and autumn months. In the main river channel adjacent to the park, diving goldeneye ducks and buffleheads can be seen.

Wander through lush trails

Carburn Park is a great place to explore, and if you wander into the woods, you may be able to spot a lean-to, a constructed wood hut, and a fire pit or two.

A popular spot for fall family photoshoots, if you visit in autumn, be sure not to wander into someone’s frame while you meander the walking trails.

Or bring your camera along for an impromptu shoot of your own amongst the falling leaves!

However you want to celebrate the season, Carburn Park will be waiting.
