This secluded hike near an Alberta mining town ends with a waterfall

12 August 20252 Mins Read

The town of Coleman was formerly known as a coal mining community, but this stunning hike nearby offers more than one reason to visit.

Located in the southwest corner of the community nestled away in Crowsnest Pass, Alta., the 1.3-mile Star Creek Falls loop meanders through a deep gorge that opens to a 30-foot waterfall.

This is the ideal time to hike the trail, as the height of summer means easy driving conditions and reduced chances to slip on the rocks at the base of the waterfall.

Access to the path begins on a gravel road at 54th Street, Coleman, Alta. You can climb the hill on foot via the trail that leads to the mountainous loop. Look behind as you climb, and you’ll catch a glimpse of Crowsnest Mountain.

The trail meanders through fields that are home to blooming wildflowers in the summer months. Once you reach the loop route, you can head down towards the creek or up for a convenient one-way trip to see the waterfall.

Taking the longer path will lead you over a quaint bridge and a steep trail that ascends through woods of spruce and fir trees. The trail loops around the top of the canyon, with pristine views of Star Creek falls and Mount Tecumseh in the background.

It’s the peak of summer and Alberta’s mountain ranges are calling. Lace up your boots!

Where: 54th Street, Coleman, Alta
How to get there:
Drive approximately 2.5 hours south of Calgary to Coleman, Alta. (and consider stopping at Frank Slide and Blairmore for a stellar day trip!)

Note: When planning your trips, please be mindful of the dangers of waterfalls and the hikes to get to them. Always let someone know if you’re planning a day hike or overnight stay outdoors. Familiarize yourself with this safety list prior to departure.
