This southern Alberta creek is filled with natural sandbars and shallow swimming spots

20 June 20263 Mins Read

Willow Creek Provincial Park is the kind of place you probably wouldn’t stumble across unless somebody told you about it.

Located near Stavely, just over an hour’s drive from Calgary, the creek features shallow swimming areas, natural sandbars, and a large campground just steps from the water.

On warm summer days, visitors can be found swimming through the creek, floating through the calm water, and setting up lawn chairs along the shoreline for the afternoon.

So if you’re willing to trade mountain crowds for a quieter day by the water, Willow Creek might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Let’s take a closer look at what the creek has to offer.

Swimming, sandbars, and slow summer days

What makes Willow Creek stand out is how accessible it feels. Unlike some Alberta swimming spots that require a hike or a long drive through rough roads, this one is easy to reach and has plenty of space to relax, whether you’re setting up for the full day or just stopping in for a quick swim.

According to Stavely Elks Parks, the swimming area features shallow wading sections, which is great if you have younger kids or just want a chill spot where you can cool off without having to commit to the deeper water. There are also plenty of natural sandbars throughout the creek where you can stop, sit and relax.

One of the coolest parts of the area is that it is surrounded by Swallows, tiny birds that dart and swoop just above the water. These birds are especially active during the summer months, so it’s important to be mindful and respect their space.

The park is managed by the Stavely Elks Parks and includes picnic areas and well-maintained washroom facilities, making it easy to spend the whole day there.

And if one afternoon by the creek is not enough, you can also stay overnight at the campground within the park. Willow Creek Campground offers 55 campsites with running water, a fire pit, and sites just steps from the water.

If you’re looking to beat the crowds this summer and spend a chill day soaking up the sun, Willow Creek is definitely a spot to add to your list. You can swim, float, or sit around on the sandbars and take in all of the scenery that the southern Alberta prairies have to offer.

So next time it’s hot out, grab your swimsuit and check it out for yourself!
