Tucked away in the province’s southwest corner, Waterton Lakes National Park is known for its dramatic mountain views, colourful canyons, glacier-fed lakes and charming small-town feel.
Waterton is close enough to Calgary for a long day trip, but we’d argue that a full weekend is the best way to experience everything that the park has to offer. Between the hikes, scenery and wildlife, there’s far too much to squeeze into a single afternoon.
Whether you’re planning your first visit or just need a little help mapping out your next mountain getaway, here’s everything you need to know before heading to Waterton.

How do I get to Waterton Lakes National Park?
Waterton Lakes National Park is tucked into the southwest corner of Alberta, close to the U.S. border, so how you get there will depend on where you’re coming from.
If you’re driving from Calgary, the park is about three hours away, making it a quick weekend road trip. From Edmonton, you’ll be looking at closer to a five-hour drive, while Lethbridge is just over an hour away.
Coming from the United States? Waterton connects directly to Montana through the Chief Mountain Highway crossing. This makes it possible to combine a trip to Waterton with a visit to Glacier National Park on the American side of the border.
Do I need a car to get there?
If you don’t have access to a car, getting to Waterton can be a little tricky. For the most part, you will need a vehicle, especially if you want to explore beyond the townsite. However, you can book a private shuttle service through Airport Shuttle Express with pickup available from most Calgary hotels or the Calgary International Airport.
Once you’re in Waterton, you can also use a local shuttle service to help get you around the area. For most visitors, a car still offers the most flexibility, especially if you want to visit different trailheads and attractions during your weekend.
When is Waterton Lakes National Park free to visit?
Waterton Lakes National Park is completely free to visit from now until Sept. 7, 2026, thanks to the Canada Strong Pass.
According to the Government of Canada, the Canada Strong Pass covers admission fees for all visitors to Parks Canada’s national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas.
The pass also includes 25% off camping and overnight accommodation fees at Parks Canada locations during the promotion, so it’s a pretty good excuse to plan that mountain getaway you’ve been putting off.
You also won’t need to pick up a physical pass before you visit. The Canada Strong Pass is simply the name of the summer promotion, so there’s nothing you’ll need to carry with you when you arrive. Regular park admission fees will return back to normal after Sept. 7, 2026.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Waterton really depends on what you’re hoping to do, but if you ask us, July and August are the best months for a classic summer trip.
During the summer, the weather is generally warmer, drier, and more predictable, and you’ll have access to a wide range of activities, including hiking, boating, and kayaking. It’s also the busiest time of year, with weekends in July and August seeing the most visitors.
If you want the scenery without quite as many people, consider visiting in September or early Fall. The crowds start to thin out, the trails are quieter, and you get the added bonus of autumn foliage.
What is there to do in Waterton?
There’s no shortage of things to do in Waterton, whether you’re looking to hike, relax by the water, or simply soak up the scenery. Some must-see spots include Red Rock Canyon, a bright-red canyon where you can walk along the trails and splash through the shallow creek.
If you’re in the mood to get out on the water, head to the Upper Waterton Lake shoreline and rent a paddleboard, kayak or canoe for a few hours. Swimming is also possible, but be prepared for very cold water. The lake is typically around 10 degrees Celsius, and strong winds can quickly make conditions rough, so check the weather and water conditions before getting in.
Waterton also has plenty of trails, from short walks to challenging full-day hikes. Bear’s Hump is one of the most popular options, with a steep climb leading to panoramic views of the townsite and Upper Waterton Lake.
Where should I stay when I go?
If you’re spending a weekend in Waterton, staying in the townsite is your best bet. Most of the hotels and lodges are within walking distance of the lake, restaurants, shops and attractions, meaning you can park your car and explore everything on foot.
For a classic Waterton stay, you can’t go wrong with the Prince of Wales Hotel, which is perched above the Upper Waterton Lake and offers plenty of historic charm.
If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, Northland Lodge is a cozy nine-room lodge near Cameron Falls, with stunning mountain views and a more intimate feel than some of the larger hotels in the area.
Can I camp there?
If you’d rather camp, Townsite Campground is the most convenient option, located in the heart of the park with 246 sites, including serviced RV sites and unserviced tent sites. It also has showers, washrooms, kitchen shelters and food storage lockers.
Looking for something a bit more secluded? Belly River Campground has 24 unserviced sites surrounded by aspen forest along the Belly River. It’s about 26 kilometres from the Waterton townsite and operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
What wildlife and safety rules do I need to know about?
Because Waterton is located in the Rocky Mountains, the park is home to plenty of wildlife including grizzly bears, black bears, elk, moose, cougars and bighorn sheep. Give these animals plenty of space, and never approach or feed them.
According to Parks Canada, visitors must stay at least 100 metres away from bears and 30 metres away from all other large animals. If you’re hiking, always be bear-aware and carry bear spray.
And yes, ignoring these rules can have consequences. Feeding or disturbing wildlife can result in a fine up to $25,000, so keep your distance and let the animals do their thing.
Can I bring my dog with me?
No need to leave your furry friend at home. Waterton is a dog-friendly destination, including on its hiking trails, as long as your pup is kept on a leash no longer than three metres and remains under control. Keep your dogs away from wildlife and never leave them unattended.
What is the weather like in Waterton?
Waterton’s weather can be quite unpredictable, so don’t let the sunny morning fool you into thinking it’ll stay that way all day.
Waterton is known for being particularly windy, especially around the Prince of Wales Hotel, and mountain weather can change quickly. No matter the season, pack layers and a jacket so you’re prepared for whatever conditions you might encounter during your visit.
Is there currently a fire ban in Waterton Lakes National Park?
As of Aug. 18, 2026, there is no fire ban in effect at the park, but restrictions can change depending on wildfire conditions. Always check Parks Canada’s current fire updates before lighting a campfire.
