Toronto’s dessert scene has never met a trend it didn’t want to supersize. The latest example is Batter Bars, a local chocolate company making thick, filling-packed bars designed as much for social media as they are for eating.
Founded by husband-and-wife duo Ruba and Ahmed Alkhatib, Batter Bars grew out of a conversation about combining custom cake creations with premium chocolate. Drawing on more than a decade of home-baking experience, Ruba helped develop a line of oversized chocolate bars filled with cake, cookies and other dessert-inspired ingredients.
Among the most popular options is the Dubai Batter, a nod to the pistachio-chocolate craze that has dominated social media feeds over the last year, combining brownie, pistachio cream and crispy kataifi pastry. Other flavours are a homage to childhood favourites, including the Smoreo, which blends Oreo cake and marshmallow filling, and the bright blue Cookie Monster, packed with cookie pieces and cotton candy-flavoured filling.
The bars have also started popping up on local social media feeds. Toronto gaming creator Mack Falconer recently reviewed them, calling them “the best chocolate bars” he’s ever had and local influencer Zaheera Mohammed also gave the bars her stamp of approval.
The founders have also tied the business to a charitable cause. A portion of every Batter Bar sold is donated to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), which provides medical and humanitarian support to children in need.
