This trail near Calgary has a stunning frozen waterfall called the ‘green monster’

19 December 20253 Mins Read

This beautiful frozen waterfall is anything but monstrous, but its name may give it a run for its money.

Called the “green monster,” this waterfall in Evan-Thomas Creek freezes over in the winter months, allowing hikers to get up close and personal with views of the emerald green falls.

The hidden gem trail isn’t very well-maintained, so users should come prepared with waterproof gear and ropes to help them cross the creek when bridges are out.

This 10.9 km out-and-back hike in Kananaskis is considered moderate and will take about five hours to complete. It’s best suited for experienced mountaineers, especially those who have hiked on ice trails before.

What to expect

It’s known as one of the most scenic and rewarding hikes in Kananaskis country — and with an abundance of frozen waterfalls and winter hiking trails nearby, that’s a difficult feat to accomplish. This “green monster” is nestled within Evan-Thomas Creek and meanders through a river valley with 550 metres of elevation gain.

Set out at the Evan-Thomas parking lot in Kananaskis country, an area that’s about an hour and a half drive west of Calgary. The route starts on Old Baldy trail, which is a wide mixed-use winter trail with a groomed cross-country ski track on one side. You’ll enjoy beautiful scenery and spectacular mountain views of Limestone Mountain and Mt. James Walker.

Continue along the frozen Evan-Thomas Creek and experience impressive vistas of the canyon walls. There are not one, but two waterfalls to pass, and the spot is popular with ice climbers. A chain and rope section will help you traverse the creek before you arrive at the infamous “green monster” frozen falls.

This hike is challenging, and it’s best completed alongside a group of experienced hikers. But if you’re craving some outstanding emerald green, glass-like waterfall views, this is it.

Where: Turner Valley, Alta.
How to get there: Drive approximately one hour and 30 minutes west of Calgary via Highway 1

Note: When planning your trips, please be mindful of the dangers of waterfalls and the hikes to get to them. Always let someone know if you’re planning a day hike or overnight stay outdoors. Familiarize yourself with this safety list prior to departure.
