Three alcohol-free drinks for Dry January | Canada Voices

3 January 20263 Mins Read

Dry January has transitioned from trend to mainstream acceptance. The monthlong abstinence campaign, launched by the non-profit Alcohol Change UK in 2013, is most popular with younger drinkers, but interest is stalling across all age groups, according to IWSR, a UK-based firm that examines alcohol consumption habits.

Surveys conducted in the fall across fifteen countries report that 39 per cent of adult drinkers engaged in temporary abstinence for one day or longer in the past six months. That figure is down from 41 per cent in spring 2025 and 40 per cent in autumn 2024.

The IWSR results reflect previous findings that Gen Z is increasingly moving toward social alcohol consumption and distancing itself from extreme moderation. Consumption rates are anticipated to rise as more people in Gen Z reach legal drinking age. That embrace is good news for the alcohol industry, which previously feared that health concerns and competition from cannabis were causing the cohort to abandon alcohol.

If you plan to avoid or reduce consumption of alcohol in the new year, there’s an ever-expanding universe of non-alcoholic beer, wines and spirits to consider. The quality level of beer and ready-to-drink options continues to improve, however, finding credible alternatives to wine continues to be a difficulty. A bright spot in the category is Lautus, an attractive range of de-alcoholized wines produced in Stellenbosch. One of its labels is featured with two other non-alcoholic options to enjoy now.

Highr Yuzu & Tonic (Australia), $11.95 / 250 ml

An innovative approach adds to the texture and complexity of this gin and tonic alternative. The interesting mix of botanicals, including chamomile, lemon balm and juniper, was selected for flavour as well as apparent calming properties. The result is a satisfying zero proof cocktail with a refreshing fizz and lingering finish. Vegan friendly. Available at the above price direct, thesobrmarket.com.

Lautus Savvy Red Non-Alcoholic Red Wine (South Africa), $24.99

Produced by Holder Vineyards in Stellenbosch, Lautus’ red blend is a mix of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and pinotage that’s had the alcohol removed. Made in dry style, this boasts a juicy character with pleasing fruit and oak-derived flavours. Available at the above price direct, softcrush.ca, $28.34 in British Columbia (Marquis Wine Cellars), $21.99 in Saskatchewan (Co-op Liquor).

Michelob Ultra Zero (Canada), $12.99, 6 x 355 ml

Brewed in London, Ont., Ultra Zero is the latest addition to Labatt’s portfolio of non-alcoholic beer. Given the light, refreshing and low-alcohol (four per cent) style of the original, the non-alcoholic version risks being too watery and neutral for some. It’s enjoyable served well-chilled and works well as a base for near-beer cocktails, such as a Michelada or Radler, or mixed with ginger beer or tonic water. Available nationally at participating retailers across Canada in 6 x 355 ml and 12 x 355 ml packs.
