Frontmezzjunkies reports: Back on the Stratfest Bus for a third round of opening nights

By Ross

It’s that time again, late into the summer when I make my highly anticipated journey back. The August return to the Stratford Festival always brings a different flavour to the town as the offerings unveil their own personality and slant. My first visit each season is one filled with anticipation, with the excitement of finally seeing months of announcements become living theatre. The next visit settles into discovery, finding unexpected treasures among productions I had been waiting, somewhat impatiently, to embrace. Now, as I board the Stratfest Bus for my third group of opening nights, I realize that this is that pivotal point in the summer when the season begins revealing its deeper, more complex shape. The Stratford Festival is no longer simply introducing its well-known style and excellence of presenting Shakespeare and world-class musicals. It is expanding the conversation, offering fresh perspectives on familiar stories while continuing to surprise with the extraordinary range of voices and viewpoints gathered together to challenge and illuminate.

That feeling grows even stronger with the opening of three productions that could hardly appear more different on paper. A brand-new comedy inspired by Restoration theatre. A beloved Italian family classic receiving its first major English translation in decades. A world première that explores the creation of one of history’s most influential books through the lens of performance itself. Yet all three seem to be reaching toward a shared theme. Each one wisely tempts us to look again at stories we think we already understand, and discover that another point of view can change everything.

The world première of The Tao of the World is at the personal core of that excitement. Written and directed by Jovanni Sy 施崇梵, the comedy draws inspiration from William Congreve’s The Way of the World, but quickly becomes something entirely of its own making, blending the razor-sharp wit of Restoration comedy with the warmth and charm of a contemporary Asian romantic comedy. At its centre is Arabella Flynn, determined to prevent her former lover from marrying her younger cousin, setting in motion an increasingly elaborate chain of schemes, misunderstandings, and romantic chaos.

What is truly fascinating about this reworking is the story behind the play itself. While studying Restoration comedy, Sy found himself reflecting on how often those plays centred on wealthy elites while overlooking the people quietly supporting their lives behind the scenes. Emerging from the years of the pandemic, he began thinking about the workers whose contributions so often disappear from public memory once the crisis has passed. Rather than simply adapting Congreve, he shifted the focus toward those unseen lives, asking whether restoration should mean returning to old social structures or imagining something different altogether. It feels like exactly the sort of question great theatre should be asking at this pivotal time in history, and I can’t wait to get there for this play’s unveiling.

From there, the Festival turns toward one of the great family plays of the twentieth century with Saturday, Sunday, Monday, receiving its first major English translation in decades through co-adaptors Antoni Cimolino and Donato Santeramo. Set over a single weekend in Naples, Eduardo De Filippo’s celebrated comedy begins with the preparation of a family meal before gradually uncovering years of buried frustrations, misunderstandings, love, forgiveness, and resilience.

What resonates most is Cimolino’s observation that even lives that appear unspectacular deserve a place on the stage. At a moment when so much of the world seems dominated by spectacle and division, there is something deeply affecting about a play that finds enormous emotional weight inside ordinary family life. Knowing that this also marks Cimolino’s final directorial project as Artistic Director, and his return to the work of De Filippo after StratFest’s Grand Magic, lends the production an additional layer of honour and significance, making it feel like both a celebration and a farewell.

The third opening, The King James Bible Play, promises yet another entirely different theatrical experience, connected by a few similar threads of intention. Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman’s world première moves between 1609, as translators wrestle with the creation of the King James Bible, and a contemporary rehearsal hall where actresses prepare to portray those very men on stage. The result becomes an exploration not simply of translation, but of interpretation itself.

Corbeil-Coleman’s description of translation as “a passing through, a handing down” stays within long after reading the announcement. Her suggestion that actors translate characters just as translators interpret language opens the door to a fascinating conversation about how stories continue to evolve across generations. Every audience arrives carrying its own experiences. Every performance becomes another act of interpretation and discovery. It feels like an especially fitting idea for a Festival built upon returning to classic works while continually discovering new ways of seeing them.

Looking at these three productions together, I am even more excited about this latest return to Stratford. One asks who deserves to stand at the centre of the story. Another discovers extraordinary emotional richness inside an ordinary family weekend. The third explores how stories themselves survive through translation, performance, and human connection. None of them seems interested in preserving familiar ideas simply because they have always existed. Examination and unwrapping are key, and I’m very game for that investigation.

That may be the greatest gift this Stratford Festival season continues to offer. Every visit reveals another layer I had not anticipated, and every opening weekend gives me another reason to keep digging into the season. As I climb on that Stratford Festival bus, ready to make my way back once again, I realize that I am not simply looking forward to seeing three new productions. I am once again hungry to discover what this remarkable “Rough Magic” season still has left to say.
