Another day and another exciting announcement comes my way from the Toronto International Film Festival, revealing the shape of the Festival itself. Every morning this week has arrived with another headline, another slate of films, another reason to wonder how September could possibly hold everything I already want to see. I’m still anxiously waiting to hear whether I’ll once again have the privilege of covering TIFF, something I remain cautiously hopeful about after last year’s unforgettable experience. Yet, even from the outside, TIFF51 already feels so alive and vibrant. Today’s Primetime announcement only deepens that feeling.

While Gala Presentations, Special Presentations, Platform, and Discovery have filled my imagination with impossible viewing choices, Primetime has always occupied its own fascinating corner of the Festival. It taps into something audiences have known for years. Some of the most ambitious storytelling today is happening in episodic form. Seeing those first episodes projected inside a theatre, surrounded by an audience discovering them together, transforms television into a genuine Festival event. Add conversations with the creators and performers afterward, and it becomes another reason TIFF continues to blur the lines between cinema and television.

This year’s lineup is filled with projects that immediately invite curiosity. Jesse McKeown’s Newfoundland-set thriller “Below” opens the programme with Mackenzie Davis, Charlie Heaton, and Josh Hartnett at the centre of what promises to be an unsettling mystery beneath the Atlantic waters. Mike Flanagan closes the programme with “Carrie“, returning to TIFF after the extraordinary reception for The Life of Chuck and once again proving that Stephen King’s work continues to inspire bold new adaptations. The programme also welcomes “Crystal Lake“, revisiting the mythology of Friday the 13th, alongside “American Hostage“, “Blindspot Berlin“, the Canadian series “YAGA“, Australia’s “2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback“, France and Canada’s “Alice“, Brazil’s “Oxygen Masks Will (Not) Drop Automatically“, and the latest season of the acclaimed “Slow Horses“.

What also stands out is the strong Canadian presence running throughout this year’s Primetime selections. McKeown’s “Below” opens the programme, while “YAGA“, created by Kat Sandler with directors Rachel Talalay and David Frazee, joins the lineup as another World Premiere. Canadian voices continue to share the spotlight with international creators, exactly the balance that has always made TIFF feel less like a national festival and more like a meeting place for storytellers from around the world.

With today’s announcement, the first wave of TIFF51 programming comes to a close. Looking back over the past several days, Opening Night, Gala Presentations, Special Presentations, Platform, Discovery, and now Primetime have steadily transformed anticipation into something much more tangible. The Festival no longer exists simply as an idea waiting for September. It already feels as though it has begun. There are still more programme reveals ahead when TIFF Takeover returns on August 4, followed by the schedule on the 11th that will send all of us scrambling to solve impossible conflicts. Until then, I find myself doing exactly what every TIFF season encourages us to do: dreaming about the stories still waiting to find us.

YAGA will premiere at TIFF starring Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid, Clark Backo, and Hudson Williams.
