'Today' Show Host Savannah Guthrie Reveals What Her Kids Shouldn't Know

12 August 20252 Mins Read

Savannah Guthrie is hoping her kids weren’t watching Tuesday morning’s show.

The Today show host made an unintentional confession live on air during August 12’s episode that had her quickly backtracking. The 53-year-old journalist was discussing viral sorority rush videos with weatherman Al Roker when the conversation took an unexpected turn.

The duo began reminiscing about the groups they belonged to during their high school and college years. “We were the geeks,” Roker, 71, joked of his AV Club friends.

“That doesn’t matter, you find your people!” Guthrie reassured.

“You do, and that’s all you have,” Roker quipped back. “Because nobody wants to be with you.”

That’s when Guthrie revealed a bombshell about her own teenage years. “Mine were the underage drinker crew. The fake ID crew…” she admitted candidly.

However, as soon as her co-hosts reacted to the shocking revelation, Guthrie immediately realized her mistake. “I know, I know, my kids could be watching,” she said, quickly backtracking.

Roker couldn’t help but point out that Guthrie’s two children, Vale, 10, and Charley, 8, might remember this confession and bring it up in the future.

“I was just gonna say, ‘Mom was an underage drinker!'” Roker said.

This candid moment isn’t the first time Guthrie has been honest about her adolescence. In 2023, she joined co-host Hoda Kotb and actor Mindy Kaling in discussing their high school experiences.

After the group acknowledged what “huge” nerds they were, Guthrie made another admission, claiming she “Didn’t go to prom!”

“Wait, did you get asked or did you ask him?” Kotb pressed. “Because I only got a date when I asked. That’s why I’m asking.”

“Me too!” Guthrie chimed in, revealing she had to ask her own prom date.

While Guthrie may not have been the most popular kid in school, she certainly grew up to become one of daytime television’s most celebrated hosts. Her journey from teenage outsider to beloved TV personality proves that high school social status doesn’t determine future success.

“I know how improbable it is that of all people on planet Earth, that it would be me,” she reflected to People. “That this little spark of a secret dream that I might’ve had in my twenties could actually come true, so specifically.”
