Toronto flight named busiest domestic route in North America

Travellers love to fly between Toronto and Vancouver, so much so that it’s been named the busiest domestic flight route in North America.

New data from OAG Aviation Worldwide Limited counted nearly 3.5 million airplane seats going between YYZ and YVR in 2024 using flight schedule data. That’s the highest number of seats between any two cities in the same country on the continent.

The Vancouver to Toronto route beat Atlanta to Orlando, which  transported more than 3.4 million passengers this year. Honolulu to Kahului in Hawaii follows close behind third place, with more than 3.3 million seats on the route this year.

The busiest overall route in 2024, including international routes, was Hong Kong to Taipei, with 6.8 million seats.

Many Canadians fly between Vancouver and Toronto as part of a longer itinerary for Europe, Asia, or Australia. However, visiting Toronto and Vancouver themselves is also a popular pastime, especially since Taylor Swift came to town this fall.

Air Canada confirmed the Toronto to Vancouver (and vice versa) itinerary is a popular one. Canada’s largest airline offers 6,700 daily seats between the two major cities during peak summer travel season.

“Air Canada’s Vancouver to Toronto service is the busiest domestic route in Canada and one of the busiest in North America,” it said.

Flair Airlines told Daily Hive its flights between Toronto and Vancouver are almost always completely full. The route is so popular that Flair is increasing weekly flights by 71 per cent in time for summer 2025 — the greatest planned growth out of all its routes. It’s planning to go from 14 flights per week to 24 flights per week.

“Demand for flights between YVR and YYZ is huge, and we’ve added capacity and adjusted our summer 2025 schedule to meet it,” Eric Tanner,  Flair’s vice president of network planning and revenue management, told Daily Hive.

Flair hopes to capture an even greater market share next year, with WestJet and Air Canada charging for bags.

“With other airlines now charging for bags, we’re confident even more travellers will choose Flair — offering the same flights at sometimes half the price,” Tanner said.
