Toronto Maple Leafs fans wake up to news of surprise late-night trade

11 July 20252 Mins Read

The Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t quite wait for the Friday news dump, but they did get in a bit of a late-night trade.

On Thursday night, the Leafs announced that they’d acquired defenceman Henry Thrun from the San Jose Sharks in a trade for forward Ryan Reaves.

Having signed a three-year deal worth US$1.35 million per year in Toronto prior to the 2023-24 season, the 38-year-old Reaves played just 35 games for the Leafs this past year, last suiting up on March 3.

Known primarily for his fighting abilities, Reaves only dropped the gloves once for Toronto last season.

“I just didn’t have a lot of run-ins,” he summed up in a recent interview on the Cam and Strick podcast. “I do wish I fought more, but we’ll see what next year brings.”

He also played three games for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this past season, all of which were at home.

“I wasn’t hopping on any buses either,” Reaves said. “That wasn’t happening.”

Thrun, meanwhile, is a 24-year-old 2019 fourth-round pick, who skated in 60 games with San Jose in 2024-25, registering two goals and 10 assists. He has spent parts of three NHL seasons with San Jose, suiting up in 119 career games.

What else have the Leafs done this offseason?

It’s been a busy summer for the Leafs so far.

They’ve re-signed Matthew Knies and John Tavares to multi-year deals, but the biggest story might be the names that are no longer with Toronto. Most notably, the departure of Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights will have the biggest impact, while top-six forward Pontus Holmberg signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Toronto also made a trade for a forward of their own, making a trade with Utah for Matias Maccelli.
