A late-night traffic stop in Toronto turned critical after two police officers opened fire, leaving a man in a life-threatening condition and triggering an investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
The incident happened around 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, near Sheppard Avenue West and Bathurst Street in North York. Toronto Police are believed to have pulled over a vehicle in relation to a Highway Traffic Act infraction, according to the SIU.
During the interaction, two officers discharged their firearms, according to early reports. A man was struck by the gunfire and transported to hospital, where he remains in critical condition as of Monday. His identity has not yet been confirmed.
Global News reports that the Lexus vehicle was stopped by police as it was missing a licence plate on its front bumper.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said Toronto Police reported a gunfire exchange around the time the officers opened fire.
“Early information indicates that there was an exchange of gunfire, that’s what Toronto police have told us,” Denette said to Global News. She added, “However, I’m unable to confirm that at this time simply because it is too early.”
The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to the case, and two officers have been designated as subject officials, while two others are considered witness officials.
