Toronto’s most epic sunrise of the year is happening this weekend

21 August 20252 Mins Read

It’s that time of year again, Toronto. Torontohenge, “the name given for the phenomenon that occurs four times per year when the sun rises or sets in line with Toronto’s major east-west streets downtown,” has come around again.

There are two sunsets and two sunrises each year, and so far, we’ve gone through one of each. Up next, an epic sunrise on Aug. 23, 2025.

The sunrise is set to begin at 6:31 a.m. on the 23rd, and you’re going to want to make sure you get there early, as people from all over the city come to witness it.

If you’ve never attended before, I highly recommend it. Back in the day, my apartment was just around the corner, and I’d try to make it to all four Torontohenge happenings. The sun rises (or sets) right down the east-west streets (Queen Street is a pretty good spot, in my opinion), looking west, illuminating the buildings and sky, with a perfect view of the sun as it moves.

Want to stay up to date on the Torontohenges? RalphB, a civil engineer specializing in sun position modelling, has been keeping the city up to date since 2009, and not only posts about Torontohenge, but also about sun glare and traffic safety, sun/shadow urban development and random fun sun facts!

If you can’t make it up bright and early on Aug. 23, be sure to catch the last Torontohenge of 2025, a sunset on Oct. 25.

The sunset will take place at 6:18 p.m. — be there or be square (just kidding, but really, it’s worth stepping outside for).

And as for the weather on the 23rd, it’s looking like clear skies in the morning. Perfect for watching the sunrise.

Enjoy the views, Toronto.
