Travel Brands Pioneer Integration with ChatGPT’s Third-Party Apps

ChatGPT has launched a new generation of third-party apps, with travel brands leading the initial integration, allowing users to interact with services like Booking.com and Expedia directly within the chat interface.

ChatGPT has announced the introduction of third-party apps within its platform, marking a significant expansion of the AI model’s capabilities. This development enables users to interact directly with various services within the chat interface. The new Apps SDK is available for developers in preview, enabling them to create apps that fit seamlessly into conversations. These apps can be discovered when ChatGPT suggests them or when users call them by name.

Availability and Initial Partners

The apps are available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the European Union, across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. Initial pilot partners include well-known brands such as Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow. These apps are currently available in markets where their services are offered, starting with English language support. More partners are expected to join later this year, and plans are in place to extend availability to EU users.

Developer Opportunities with Apps SDK

Developers can start building and testing apps using the new Apps SDK, which is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This open standard allows ChatGPT to connect with external tools and data. The SDK enables developers to design both the logic and interface of their apps, with the flexibility to use their own code and connect directly to their backend systems. OpenAI has provided documentation, design guidelines, and example apps to assist developers in creating interactive and conversational experiences.

User Interaction with Apps

Users can interact with apps by starting a message with the app’s name, such as “Expedia hotels in Chicago with a king bed under $250″ or “Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday.” ChatGPT will then integrate the app into the chat, using relevant context to assist the user. Additionally, ChatGPT can suggest apps when they are relevant to the conversation. For example, if a user discusses buying a new home, ChatGPT might suggest the Zillow app to browse real estate listings.

Safety, Privacy, and Future Developments

OpenAI has established policies to ensure that every app within ChatGPT adheres to usage guidelines, is appropriate for all audiences, and complies with partner rules for third-party integrations. Developers are required to include clear privacy policies and collect only the minimum data necessary. Users are informed about data sharing the first time they connect to an app. Later this year, more granular controls will be introduced to manage data categories that each app can access.

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to launch apps for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu users. A dedicated directory will be introduced, allowing users to browse and search for apps. Developers will be able to submit their apps for publication, with those meeting higher design and functionality standards potentially receiving more prominent placement. Details on app monetization, including support for the Agentic Commerce Protocol, are expected to be shared soon.
