Travel Tops UK Spending Priorities, with Mental Health a Key Factor: ABTA Report

UK Holidaymakers Prioritize Travel Despite Economic Challenges, ABTA Report Reveals

According to the latest ABTA Holiday Habits 2025-26 report, a significant majority of UK residents continue to prioritize holiday spending, with an increasing number opting for overseas travel despite various global challenges. The report highlights a resilient travel sector, with holidays seen as essential for mental health and well-being.

Travel Trends and Priorities

The ABTA report indicates that 87% of UK people took a holiday in the past year, a slight increase from the previous year and nearly matching the high of 2019. This rise is notable in international travel, with 59% traveling abroad, up from 53%. Despite economic pressures, only 28% of respondents would consider cutting back on holiday spending to manage daily living costs, the lowest percentage in recent years. This contrasts with higher percentages willing to reduce spending on dining out, entertainment, clothing, and electronics.

Spending and Mental Health Considerations

The commitment to travel is not only about leisure but also reflects its importance to personal well-being. Approximately 80% of respondents acknowledged the importance of holidays for their mental health, with this figure rising to 90% among those aged 25-34. Furthermore, a growing number of travelers, 34%, anticipate spending more on travel next year than they did this year.

Travel Preferences and Booking Behaviors

Beach holidays remain the most popular type of vacation, with 48% of respondents choosing this option. City breaks are also popular, with a notable increase in preference from 43% to 47%. The report also found that value for money is a primary consideration for travelers, influencing decisions to book package holidays and use travel professionals.

Global Context and Industry Resilience

ABTA’s report suggests that despite global issues such as climate change, economic instability, and political shifts, the UK travel sector remains robust. Spain and the USA continue to be top destinations for UK travelers. ABTA emphasizes the travel industry’s role in maintaining consumer confidence and adapting to a price-sensitive market.

Conclusion

The ABTA Holiday Habits 2025-26 report highlights a strong desire among UK residents to maintain and even increase their holiday spending, viewing it as essential for their mental health and overall well-being. The travel industry, supported by ABTA’s initiatives, plays a vital role in ensuring travelers feel confident and receive value for their money, contributing to the sector’s resilience.
