Travelodge CEO Jo Boydell Steps Down Amid Hotel Security Overhaul

25 August 20265 Mins Read

In Brief: Travelodge CEO Jo Boydell has stepped down as the UK hotel group implements new guest security procedures following scrutiny over a sexual assault at one of its hotels and the company’s handling of the incident. CFO Ray Reidy has been appointed interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent successor.

  • Travelodge CEO Jo Boydell Steps Down Amid Hotel Security Overhaul

Travelodge chief executive Jo Boydell has stepped down after 13 years with the company, with her departure coming as the hotel group continues an overhaul of guest security procedures following criticism over a sexual assault at one of its properties.

Travelodge said Boydell stepped down as CEO on August 17. Chief Financial Officer Ray Reidy was appointed interim chief executive effective August 20 and will continue to serve as CFO until an interim replacement is named. The board has begun a formal search for a permanent CEO.

Travelodge did not give a reason for Boydell’s departure and has not stated that it was directly related to the security controversy. However, chairman Stephen Shurrock emphasized that the leadership change would not alter the company’s response to the issue.

“This announcement does not change anything about our focus on safety and security,” Shurrock said in announcing the change.

Boydell had been CEO since May 2022, after serving as Travelodge’s chief financial officer from 2013.

Sexual assault prompted scrutiny of hotel procedures

The security controversy stems from a December 2022 incident at a Travelodge hotel in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

A man obtained a key card to a female guest’s room by deceiving hotel staff and subsequently sexually assaulted her. The attacker was sentenced earlier this year to seven-and-a-half years in prison for sex offences.

The case drew renewed attention to Travelodge’s procedures after details emerged about how the attacker had been able to obtain access to the room and how the company responded following the assault.

According to ITV News, the victim, whose identity has been protected, wrote directly to Boydell in January 2023, shortly after the incident, describing what had happened and asking the company to investigate.

Boydell said earlier this year that the correspondence had been handled on her behalf and had not been escalated to her. She said she did not learn the details of the case until March 2026, after it was brought to her attention following media coverage.

Travelodge subsequently acknowledged shortcomings both in its handling of the victim’s case and in the escalation of the incident internally.

“We got things wrong and we should have acted sooner,” Boydell said in a company statement in March.

The company also faced reports of other alleged security breaches involving hotel room access, increasing scrutiny of its policies for issuing additional or replacement room keys.

Government pressure followed

The controversy also attracted political attention.

Then-Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wrote to Boydell in March after she cancelled a planned meeting with MPs about the case and hotel security procedures.

Starmer said he was “very concerned” that MPs had not been able to hear directly from the chief executive and urged Travelodge to “seriously engage” with the government over the issue.

The political intervention increased pressure on the hotel group to demonstrate that lessons from the Maidenhead incident were being applied across its portfolio.

Travelodge changes room access procedures

Travelodge has since introduced a series of changes affecting guest security across its more than 600 hotels.

Under the revised room-access policy, additional or replacement room keys may only be issued with the explicit permission of the registered guest or guests staying in the room. Travelodge also says employees will not confirm to a third party whether a particular guest is staying at one of its hotels.

Travelodge said the revised procedures have been rolled out across its portfolio and supported by training for approximately 12,000 customer-facing employees.

The company has also checked that guestrooms using key-card access have secondary deadbolts and introduced additional senior leadership training developed with an expert specializing in violence against women and girls.

Travelodge commissioned an independent review led by barrister Paul Greaney KC, whose work includes public inquiries involving security, serious violent crime and health and safety. The review is examining room-access policies and Travelodge’s procedures for escalating and responding to serious incidents.

Travelodge is also participating in UKHospitality’s Guest Security Working Group, which is developing broader industry guidance on guest security practices.

In its August 20 financial update, Travelodge said investment in guest and employee safety remained a priority.

Interim CEO Reidy said the company would continue taking measures to strengthen the business and would work with the government and hospitality industry on safety and security issues.

Leadership change comes as Travelodge continues expansion

The leadership transition comes as Travelodge continues investing in its estate and pursuing further expansion in the UK and Spain.

The company operates more than 630 hotels with approximately 49,000 guestrooms across the UK, Ireland and Spain.

Travelodge reported a “solid” first-half performance despite what it described as a challenging market environment. More than 75% of its estate has now been upgraded to its newer hotel design, while three hotels opened during the first half of the year in the UK and Spain.

The company said the CEO change would not alter its strategic priorities or its continuing focus on guest safety.

For the wider hotel industry, the Travelodge case has highlighted the importance of controls surrounding room access, staff verification procedures and the escalation of serious guest-safety incidents. Policies governing something as routine as issuing a replacement room key can become a significant safeguarding issue when identity and authorization procedures fail.
