Calgary is getting a brand-new Pride celebration this year, and it’s bringing a pretty iconic name along for the party. Pride on the Island will make its debut at Prince’s Island Park this September, with international drag superstar Trixie Mattel taking the stage as the headliner.
Here’s everything you need to know about Calgary’s newest Pride celebration.
Taking over Prince’s Island Park for the first time, Pride on the Island will turn the outdoor space into Calgary’s largest outdoor Pride dance party. According to organizers, the event will feature a full evening of music and performances from local and international talent.
Leading the lineup is drag star Trixie Mattel, who will take the stage as the event’s featured DJ. Best known for winning RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, appearing on television, and building a massive following online, Trixie Mattel has become one of the most recognizable names in the drag world.
She’ll be joined by a lineup of DJs, drag performers, and entertainers, with Calgary’s own Karla Marx taking on hosting duties throughout the night.
The new celebration is being put on by Calgary Pride alongside local partners Dickens, The Cabaret Company, and Detour YYC, who are teaming up to bring this first-of-its-kind event to the city. With their combined expertise in creating LGBTQ2S+ events across Calgary, the team behind the event already knows how to put on a party, so it’s safe to say Pride on the Island is worth getting excited about.
Tickets, timing and additional details
The 18+ event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Prince’s Island Park from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., with gates opening at 4 p.m.
