Two ways to celebrate Oktoberfest in Toronto starting this month, Canada Reviews

16 September 20263 Mins Read

So whether you’re looking for a ticketed festival or a more casual afternoon of beer and food in the Distillery District, there are a couple of ways to get into the Oktoberfest spirit.

Toronto Oktoberfest at Fort York

A traditional Oktoberfest experience awaits at Garrison Common at Fort York on Sept. 25 and 26, with Toronto Oktoberfest offering two days of German food, beer, music, dancing and entertainment.

The festival has traditional and modern elements, with programming that includes polka music, Schuhplattler dancers, German rock and cover bands, DJs, contests, games and an Oktoberfest cabaret show. There will also be a tribute to German singer Heino.

Food and drink will lean into German and European favourites, with beer and spirits alongside Oktoberfest classics and modern takes on Bavarian fare. Non-alcoholic, vegan and gluten-free options will also be available.

And if you’re heading there early, there is an incentive to get through the gates: the first 500 attendees per session receive a free German beer stein.

The festival also encourages visitors to embrace the traditional side of Oktoberfest by wearing lederhosen or dirndls, although dressing up isn’t required.

Distillery District Oktoberfest

If you want to stretch Oktoberfest out over more than one weekend, the Distillery District has the answer.

The Distillery District Oktoberfest, Poured by Mill Street, runs Sept. 19–20, Sept. 26–27 and Oct. 3–4, with programming that runs throughout the day from 2 to 9 p.m.

The Pure Spirits Courtyard will take on a Bier Hall atmosphere with a tented area, communal picnic tables, blue-and-white gingham, pumpkins and fall decorations.

Mill Street will serve a selection of beers, including a special Festbier brewed for the event, while the food lineup includes currywurst poutine, chicken schnitzel sandwiches, spätzle and cheese, sausage, warm pretzels and smoked brisket Reuben sandwiches.

There will also be more unique dishes such as Jägerschnitzel and Schweinshaxe, a twice-cooked pork knuckle served with bier gravy and traditional German sides.

Live music features the Black Forest Band bringing polka to the Trinity Street Stage from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 19–20, Sept. 26–27 and Oct. 3. The Happy Wanderers take over on Oct. 4 with music from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

There’s also Beer Pong on Saturdays from 5 to 6 p.m. and Oktoberfest Trivia on Sundays at the same time.

And, the Distillery District is adding an special experience on opening weekend.

On Sept. 19 and 20, Trinity Street will become an open-air Bier Hall centred around a 150-foot-long communal table.

The ticketed feast includes an Oktoberfest pork sausage, Bavarian fries, a pretzel and more, plus a stein of Mill Street Festbier Lager. A vegetarian sausage option is also available.

Tickets are $30 plus HST per person.

The second largest Oktoberfest in the world

For the full Oktoberfest experience, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest runs Sept. 25 to Oct. 17, marking its 58th annual festival. Spread across the region’s German clubs, Festhallen and community venues, the festival features Bavarian food and beer, polka music, family events and longtime traditions including the Thanksgiving Day Parade.
