Vancouver is getting a new waterfront fireworks show for one night only this summer

10 June 20263 Mins Read

There is now a scheduled date for Vancouver’s one-night fireworks celebration this summer to help fill the void left by the cancellation of the three-night Honda Celebration of Light fireworks competition.

The City of Vancouver announced today its free, one-night fireworks show will take place at the usual location of English Bay on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the start of the B.C. Day long weekend.

It falls on the same weekend as the Vancouver Pride Parade, which will be held on Sunday, Aug. 2.

This fireworks event will be formally called the “Summer Lights in English Bay.”

Few details are available at this time. The precise fireworks start and end times, viewing areas, road closures, public transit recommendations, accessibility information, and public safety reminders will be shared publicly closer to the date.

While there will be a significant fireworks extravaganza launched from a barge in the middle of English Bay, the event setup at English Bay Beach will be scaled back compared to what has typically accompanied the Honda Celebration of Light each year. There will not be any premium lounges or pre-fireworks entertainment, such as air shows, drone shows, or performances, but there will still be food trucks on site at English Bay Beach.

“Summer Lights in English Bay is about bringing people together for a spectacular evening in one of Vancouver’s most iconic settings,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim in a statement.

“This is a free, welcoming celebration for residents, families and visitors to enjoy during what will be an extraordinary summer for our city.”

BrandLive, the Vancouver-based event production company behind many of the region’s largest events, including its role as the longtime organizer of the Honda Celebration of Light and the organizer of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Fan Festival at the PNE fairgrounds in Hastings Park, will return as the producer of the Summer Lights in English Bay fireworks show.

Due to the evaporation of funding from the federal and provincial governments, as well as reduced corporate sponsorship amid a weak economic climate, BrandLive announced the cancellation of the 2026 Honda Celebration of Light in November 2025. At the time, the company said it was nearly $1 million short and had also absorbed losses from previous years, but the projected shortfall for 2026 was too much for the company to bear.

In February 2026, the Vancouver City Council approved a member’s motion from Mayor Sim directing City staff to plan a one-night fireworks celebration this summer to help fill the void left by the cancellation of Vancouver’s multi-night fireworks competition tradition.

City Council also approved redirecting $1.4 million that had already been budgeted to support the 2026 Honda Celebration of Light to the one-night fireworks show, along with a one-time additional investment of $600,000. Each year, the City already covers the fireworks competition’s costs related to policing, road closures, traffic control, and sanitation.

The one-night fireworks show is intended to be a stopgap measure that carries forward the momentum of the decades-long tradition, with the goal of helping restore the full event in Summer 2027.

This fireworks event will come about two weeks after the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup championship final and the closure of the 28-day FIFA World Cup Fan Festival at the PNE.
