Vancouver’s largest Latin American celebration is transforming this park into a three-day fiesta

Get ready for the ultimate summer fiesta, Vancouver, because this year’s Carnaval del Sol is taking over Jonathon Rogers Park for three days this week! It’s a time-honoured tradition in the city that has grown to become the largest Latin American celebration in the Pacific Northwest, and it’s pretty special that it coincides with Vancouver’s time as a host city for the FIFA World Cup.

Brazil and Mexico might be out of the running, but the party vibes will be flowing at Carnaval del Sol, with plenty of opportunities to celebrate Latin culture from across the Americas.

Set to transform Jonathon Rogers Park from Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12, this year’s Carnaval del Sol will operate under the theme of “Play Loud, Celebrate Proud — Together We Are Stronger,” bringing thousands of attendees together to enjoy live music by over 350 global artists — the festival’s largest lineup yet.

It will embrace the energy, passion, and joy that unite Latin communities, while inviting everyone to gather for three days of music, food, fútbol, and community.

Aside from live music across three days, there will be multiple themed plazas and immersive cultural experiences, including live dance, art, sports activations, and family activities throughout the weekend.

At the heart of the celebration is the iconic Plaza del Sol, where featured concerts and cultural showcases will bring non-stop energy from day to night.

El Gran Silencio’s Vancouver debut

Opening night will kick off on July 10 at 5 p.m., with an electrifying performance by headliner band El Gran Silencio. An iconic Mexican band known for its fusion of cumbia, rock, and reggae, the band will make its Vancouver debut at the festival.

The weekend continues with two full days of music, dance, food and cultural experiences on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12.

The fun will carry on throughout the weekend, with top artists everywhere from Chile to the Dominican Republic slated to take the stage.

On Sunday, July 12, festival attendees can look forward to a Latin American Parade.

How much are tickets?

Tickets to opening night are priced at $60 for general admission on account of the El Gran Silencio concert, but weekend admission ranges from $18 to $25 for general admission, depending on the day you go.

VIP pricing ($45 to $90 depending on the day) is available if you want to enjoy front-of-stage viewing at the Main Stage and access to shaded lounge seating and private washrooms.

So mark your calendars and get ready to dance all weekend long. Khatsahlano will also take place this weekend, as will the VSO’s Symphony at Sunset, so there will be plenty of concerts to check out across the city!
