VEEPS All Access has just landed in Canada as a first-of-its-kind subscription service that provides exclusive access to live entertainment through the VEEPS app. With a new Canada-exclusive offer, Postmedia readers can save 30 per cent on a VEEPS All Access subscription for a limited time.

As part of the official launch, Canadian subscribers can take part in a special livestream event featuring one of Canada’s most iconic bands, Metric, performing live from Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on June 6.

“We’re thrilled to have people from all over the world join us virtually for this very special hometown performance of Fantasies in Toronto,” says Emily Haines, lead singer of Metric. “It’s going to be a romantic, nostalgic evening for all. Wherever you may be, we’d love to have you there with us.”

I had a chance to explore what’s included in a VEEPS All Access membership ahead of the Canadian launch. Here’s what you need to know.

What: VEEPS All Access live entertainment subscription
Price: $14/month or $140/year (Regularly $19.99/month or $199/year)
Where to watch: VEEPS

VEEPS All Access subscription: First impressions

I’ve been enjoying the variety and the quality of the platform’s musical library. Having missed out on Coldplay’s first run of the Music of the Spheres tour in Vancouver, the band’s live performance from Buenos Aires’ River Plate stadium was first on my list to check out. It was easy to find by searching for the band in the app’s search bar or by browsing through the list of popular artists.

I watched the recording from my laptop and found the video was crisp, high quality (available up to 4K resolution) and sounded great when paired with a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. When the stream started, I did have some issues with it buffering, but that’s more likely an issue with my internet connection than the VEEPS app — it resolved when I switched the video quality to a lower resolution. A few other concerts I’ve added to my watchlist include Vampire Weekend’s Total Solar Eclipse: Live from Moody Amphitheatre, Arcade Fire: Live At Earls Court and Mac DeMarco Live at Hype Machine’s Hype Hotel, as well as stand-up performances by Jonathan Van Ness and Katherine Ryan.

The live events page highlights upcoming gigs — I’m excited to watch Metric live, and I’m keeping my eye on this page for more of my favourite artists.  There are several concerts and events streaming weekly, and access to all of them is included with an All Access subscription. You can view the schedule of upcoming events here.

Favourite feature: Ad-free access

As someone who often uses YouTube to stream music but doesn’t have a YouTube Premium subscription, VEEPS All Access is a great alternative to throw on in the background while I’m working, ad-free. Fans of The Try Guys will also be happy to know that founding member Keith Habersberger’s comedy band Lewberger is included in the VEEPS catalogue.

It’s been great getting to watch concerts and stand-up while using my walking pad, since the music and visuals are interesting, but not so stimulating that I have to fight to pay attention while multitasking.

Least favourite feature: Limited library

Given that VEEPS All Access is a relatively new subscription service, it makes sense that there are some gaps in its library. While there are many great artists and comedians to choose from, concerts from some major performers are still missing. If you’re hoping to catch performances from stars like Taylor Swift, Madonna or Rihanna, you’re out of luck (at least for now). VEEPS has a follow button for your favourite artists so you can be notified directly in the VEEPS app of the latest news and performances as they become available. Fingers remain crossed for Taylor.

Final thoughts

If you’re a fan of live music, stand-up comedy or concert movies, a VEEPS All Access subscription is worth adding to your collection of streaming services. Given the price of concert tickets these days, it’s an affordable way to expand your musical tastes without breaking the bank. It’s also a great addition to your digital library, with many titles and specials that aren’t available on any other platforms. I’d recommend browsing through the current archive to see whether there are performances from artists you’re interested in watching. Also, keep an eye on VEEPS as it continues to grow its offering of concerts, comedy and more.

What is VEEPS?

Think of VEEPS as the live entertainment version of streaming services like Netflix or Disney+. The platform offers music and comedy fans 3,000+ hours of pre-recorded concerts, artist interviews and stand-up comedy, as well as access to live concerts streamed exclusively through VEEPS.
