Waldameer Just Announced a Major New 2027 Roller Coaster—And It Proves Smaller Parks Are Dominating Right Now

10 June 20264 Mins Read

If you feel like your summer amusement park trips have gotten a lot more exciting lately, you aren’t imagining things. We are living through an absolute golden era for roller coaster enthusiasts, and you don’t have to jet off to a massive destination resort to get your adrenaline fix.

Right now, regional gems and major chains like Six Flags are locked in a friendly arms race to win over travelers. Thanks to innovative new tier-structured pass programs—like memberships that unlock access to multiple sister parks for weekend road trips—and a rapid wave of new ride construction stretching into 2026 and 2027, local parks are packing serious value onto the midway. The latest proof comes out of Erie, Pennsylvania, where the historic, family-owned Waldameer Park just gave fans a thrilling first look at its massive new attraction slated for the 2027 season.

Dubbed Eagle’s Pursuit, the newly announced ride will mark Waldameer’s sixth roller coaster. It is designed to take brilliant advantage of the park’s natural, hilly terrain, soaring over the hillside with panoramic views overlooking Lake Erie. The impressive stats boast a 60-foot elevation change, nearly 1,900 feet of twisting steel track, and two separate, high-powered launches that will blast riders through the trees at a top speed of 46 miles per hour.

What makes Eagle’s Pursuit so fascinating to industry insiders is that it perfectly mirrors the biggest theme park trend sweeping the country this summer: the rise of the high-thrill “family coaster.” For a long time, parks built rides for two distinct categories—gentle kiddie coasters or terrifying, 200-foot-tall steel giants that required you to be a fully grown teenager just to clear the queue. Today, parks are leaning into a sweet spot that delivers genuine, glossy speed and airtime pops but keeps a much shorter, highly accessible 38-inch height requirement. It means a brave eight-year-old daredevil can experience a world-class launch ride right alongside their parents.

According to Jakob Wahl, Executive Director of IAAPA (the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions), this shift toward high-thrill, highly accessible rides is defining the modern midway. “I think one of the big trends actually in this industry is that you see many parks investing into attractions that are able to be experienced by different generations,” Wahl notes. “Many park operators and suppliers have invested a lot into building roller coasters which are which are thrilling, but which at the same time can be experienced by younger kids.”

To pull off this specific magic, Waldameer is partnering with Vekoma for the very first time in the park’s long history. If you aren’t a self-proclaimed “coaster nerd,” Vekoma is a legendary Dutch ride manufacturer famous for completely reinventing how smooth, modern family coasters feel. Older generations might remember family coasters as clunky, jerky rides that left you with a bit of a head knock. Vekoma changed the game by engineering incredibly smooth track transitions, comfortable individual lap bars that don’t pinch, and sophisticated magnetic launch systems.

Theme park enthusiasts are highly enthusiastic about the announcement, noting it is an “honest[ly] couldn’t be a better addition for this park” that “should fit right in with their collection.” Fans praised the ride’s layout, stating they are “so happy to see the terrain usage” and highlighting that “between this and RF2 [Ravine Flyer II] this is a great 1-2 punch for a small family regional park.” Overall, coasters nerds agree it “looks very fun and gives me more reason to do a Pennsylvania trip” to support a “family owned park grow with major additions.”

Seeing an independent, regional park like Waldameer invest in this level of cutting-edge international craftsmanship is a huge win for local tourism, and it sets up a stellar safety net for family vacation planners over the next few years. Whether you’re holding a multi-park season pass or just packing up the car for a classic lakeside summer tradition, the horizon for theme park fans has never looked brighter.
