Wander through fields of blooms and pick your own bouquet at this farm near Calgary

Just a short drive outside Calgary lies a farm field where you can wander and pick your own bouquet. Sheep River Farm has become a quiet summer stop for anyone looking for something simple and relaxing to do outdoors.

A simple summer escape near the city

Sheep River Farm is located in Foothills County, between Okotoks and Turner Valley, just about 45 minutes from Calgary. It’s surrounded by wide-open prairie views and scenery that makes you feel a little more removed from the city.

According to organizers, the main draw here is the pick-your-own flower experience. Visitors can create their own bouquets using fresh, seasonal blooms grown right on the farm.

It’s definitely the kind of place where you can take your time, walk through different rows and pick whatever catches your eye-and maybe snap a few Instagram photos while you’re at it. Depending on the season, the fields change slightly, so no two visits look exactly the same.

Beyond the u-pick flower fields, the farm also offers a curated floral experience. One of their seasonal offerings is Sweet Sunset Saturdays, a sunset floral experience where guests can walk through flower fields in golden hour light, cut their own blooms, and then head to a long farmhouse table to design a bouquet. The experience also includes refreshments, a sweet treat from a local shop, and a complimentary vase to take home.

The farm typically opens in late July, when the blooms are in full swing, and the fields are most vibrant. The timing can shift slightly depending on weather and growing conditions, but mid-summer is usually when everything comes alive.

The story behind the Sheep River Farm

According to organizers, Sheep River Farm was founded by Christine Lemieux, a grower with a lifelong love of nature, gardening, and rural living. What started as a small handmade goods business eventually grew into Sheep River Farm after a move to Okotoks in the foothills of Alberta in 2021. Today, the farm focuses on creating a space where people can experience flowers in a more hands-on, meaningful way.

So if your ideal day involves frolicking through a flower field like you’re in a movie, Sheep River Farms is a must-visit spot. It’s close to Calgary, easy to get to, and perfect for a simple afternoon.
