Brendon Savic’s first time on an airplane was in 2011. Young and eager to travel, he flew to Las Vegas for a vacation that spring. Three months later, at 24, he left a burgeoning career in marketing to become a flight attendant.
“The travel bug bit me, and that feeling never left,” he said.
More than 15 years later, Savic still relishes travelling. Now a senior flight attendant with WestJet, his seniority allows him to take frequent leisure trips around the world.
For work, Savic flies about 15 to 20 days a month. He prefers stacking multiple short flights in a day and finishing his shift at home in Calgary or in Toronto. Those days often start around 5:15 a.m. and involve two or three flights – sometimes to Caribbean destinations such as St. Maarten or Punta Cana – before ending around 9 p.m. Savic also takes longer routes, such as flights to Paris, where he’ll fly over the holidays and stay an extra few days to explore.
His personal travel calendar is just as full: a week-long trip to Mexico in January, a quick getaway to New York in February and Australia, where he’ll spend a month and a half in March.
At 6-foot-4, Savic said long flights can be tough.
“It’s all about the comfortability of your clothing,” he said. “If your legs aren’t able to move very much, you want to make sure you wear something comfortable to stretch as much as you can.”
For him, that means lightweight pants and a breathable button-up shirt – pieces that keep him cool in warm cabins and polished enough to boost his chances of getting an upgrade.
“I always dress to be ready for an upgrade,” he said. “As flight attendants, we notice that when we choose who to upgrade.”
Savic also recommends bringing small gifts – chocolates, gum, hand sanitizer or scratch tickets – for the crew and introducing yourself to them as you board. Those gestures can improve your chances of an upgrade, especially when flying standby. On a recent trip to North Carolina, Savic moved up from economy to business class this way.
Travelling with only a carry-on is also key. Even for long trips, Savic packs just a week-and-a-half’s worth of clothing, rolls his garments to save space and books accommodation with either laundry service or easy access to a machine to keep luggage minimal.
The carry-on: Travelpro Connoisseur 4
“I prefer soft carry-on luggage because it can be sleek and easy to carry, but it’s also easily expandable. I like this one because if I go shopping while I’m travelling, I can expand it, and the fabric can handle some extra items and shoving.”

The side bag: TUMI Alpha Compact Sling

“This side bag is sleek, and I have it monogrammed with my initials. It fits my passport and phone, and it even includes a built‑in chain for my keys. This works well for anyone who doesn’t want to carry around their extra items in a jacket.”

The evening shirt: State & Liberty “The Iris”

“This shirt is stretchy and doesn’t wrinkle. I wear it on the plane, and often I’ll wear it out to a nice dinner while I’m on vacation. It’s good for staying sharp, and I like the fact that it stays tucked in, even after sitting in an airplane seat for hours.”

The comfort trouser: Under Armour Drive Tapered pants

“I like these pants for travelling because they’re breathable and lightweight. They work well on long flights where aircraft cabins often run warm. They also have good stretch, which works well for my frame, and can be dressed up or down with ease.”

The sole saver: Beckett Simonon Dean Oxfords

“These dress shoes have enough room for orthotics or slight foot swelling, which happens often while I’m flying. I wear them on the plane and can use them to go to dinner or a meeting.”

The toiletry kit: PAVILIA Travel Hanging Toiletry Bag

“This toiletry bag rolls up, so I can easily stuff it into my carry-on. But it also has a hook so it can hang in a hotel bathroom. The lining is waterproof, which prevents leaks and protects clothes from liquids with the pressure changes that happen in the air.”

The custom fragrance: Ruqayya Oud Custom Travel‑Size Roller

“I love this place in Toronto because you can make your own scent. I’ve made multiple scents – you spend a couple of hours at Ruqayya and you can make a completely custom smell that always gets attention and questions about its uniqueness. The scents come in rollers, usually under 100 millilitres, which is travel-friendly.”

The laundry bag: Heavy Duty Laundry Bag

“I got into the habit of packing a large waterproof bag. I pack my clean clothes into it, which protects them from water and moisture. As I use clothes throughout the trip, it helps keep the clean ones separated from the used. It also doubles as a dry bag for beaches.”
