What’s In a Name? — 24TH STREET THEATRE, Theater News

1 April 20266 Mins Read

Wallis Annenberg was a philanthropic legend in non-profit circles. The Annenberg Foundation is one of the largest and highest profile foundations that fund arts in California. There are a million things in LA and elsewhere that bear the name Wallis Annenberg; the new Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing being built over the 101 freeway, the Annenberg PhotoSpace, the Annenberg School of Communication at USC, The Wallis Annenberg PetSpace in Playa Vista, The California Science Center has a building named after her, the Wallis Annenberg GenSpace for seniors, the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica, and my personal favorite the beautiful Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

The Wallis in Beverly Hills is one of our connections to the late great Wallis Annenberg. Right after the pandemic, we took our NAACP Award-winning Rapunzel Alone, by Mike Kenny to the Wallis in Beverly Hills. In fact our show was the very first thing back indoors at the Wallis after everything had been outdoors for over a year. Masks were still being worn by audience members, and all audience had to be covid tested to meet the Wallis’ strict Covid safety standards. As the 90210 zip code implies, The Wallis is one classy performing arts center built out of the elegant old Beverly Hills Post Office. We were honored to be performing there.

Another connection to Wallis Annenberg was through the Annenberg Foundation.  We’ve received many grants from them over the years. Everyone is non-profit arts in LA has. In 2013 24th Street Theatre was one of the first non-profits to complete the Annenberg Alchemy program with our Board Chair. It was a months-long program that helped non-profits improve governance challenges with best practices.

A little more than 15 years ago, I was sitting at my desk backstage and Debbie and our then Executive Assistant, Meropi Peponides, were also in the office with me. The main phone line rang and was answered by our staffer up in the box office. Then she buzzed my phone…

“Jay, there’s a Wallis Annenberg on the phone for you.  Do you want to take it?” My staffer asked over the intercom.

“Wait, What did you say?” I clarified, “The Annenberg Foundation is on the phone?

“She just said it’s Wallis Annenberg.”

“Wallis Annenberg is on the phone right now?” I repeated in disbelief.

“Oh my God” screams Debbie.

Meropi says  “Who is Wallis Annenberg?”

“Stand up” Debbie instructs Meropi as I take the call. She and Meropi jump up from the sofa in the office and stand at attention like soldiers.

“Hi this is Jay” I say professionally into the phone as if I always answer this way.

“Why are we standing at attention?”, asked Meropi.

“SSSShhhh,” Deb shushes as I speak very briefly with Wallis.

Wallis is very nice and tells me that she likes to make the calls to tell non-profits of their grant awards. She tells me we’d been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Annenberg Foundation and she congratulates me.  I thank her profusely, honestly a bit too much, and then hang up. I turn my chair around to see Meropi and Deb still standing at attention in front of the couch.

“It’s okay now.” I told them both.  “At ease.”

Luego, me llamó…

“Jay, habla Wallis Annenberg.

“Tranquilas”.
