Where to do a polar plunge in Vancouver on New Year’s Day to beat the crowds at English Bay

The Polar Bear Swim at English Bay is a time-honoured tradition in Vancouver, now in its 106th year. Thousands of beach-goers take to its icy waters to kick off the new year, but if you want to partake in the tradition without the scores of people, not to worry. There are plenty of Vancouver beaches to choose from that offer just as cold a plunge and community spirit.

Here are some alternatives to English Bay if you’re in search of a scenic New Year’s Day plunge.

Famous for being clothing-optional, this relaxed beach sits at the bottom of nearly 500 steps, so you’ll be able to warm up before plunging into its beautiful waters. This legendary beach is known for having its own polar bear swim, so you likely won’t be alone in the effort.

Where: SW Marine Dr., Vancouver

There are plenty of wide open spaces and tinier corners of Jericho you can corner, depending on how private or public you want your plunge to be.

Where: 3941 Point Grey Rd.

There’s plenty of wide, open space at Spanish Banks, though there’s a chance you’ll have a long way to trek (up to a kilometre!) if you accidentally plunge during low tide.

Where: Along Northwest Marine Dr., west of Tolmie St.

The same can be said about Locarno, located right next to Spanish Banks. A designated “quiet beach,” this is a great spot to take advantage of free parking as well.

Where: On the west side of Jericho Park on Northwest Marine Dr.

With its calm waters, Cates Park Beach is perfect for those looking for a quieter alternative to the beaches above that’s no less scenic.

Where: 4141 Dollarton Highway., North Vancouver

A West Van local favourite, Ambleside Beach has plenty of sandy stretches to set up your towels and warming gear, and it offers plungers the chance to enjoy incredible views of Lions Gate Bridge and Stanley Park.

Where: Argyle Ave., West Vancouver
