Last week, Trump made waves when he talked about the United States taking over Greenland, going so far as refusing to rule out using military or economic force to do so.
Greenland’s prime minister, Múte Egede, has since addressed the statement, telling reporters that while “The reality is we are going to work with the U.S. — yesterday, today and tomorrow,” the autonomous Danish territory is not interested in becoming part of the United States. “All of us were shocked,” he said, per The New York Times.
Panelists on The View discussed the issue on the Jan. 13 episode of the talk show, with Sunny Hostin sharing that she wasn’t a fan of democratic senator John Fetterman “kissing the ring” and traveling to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Trump and jokingly asking to be made the “pope of Greenland.”
“I want [Trump] to stop talking about Greenland. Greenland is not for sale. Why is Donald Trump talking about Greenland? You know why he’s talking about Greenland? Because it has oil and natural resources that are… unique to China and Russia, and that’s what he wants,” said Hostin.
Alyssa Farah Griffin chimed in to note that the United States “has troops in Greenland, there are national security reasons that we care about,” but Hostin countered that she doesn’t think Trump “cares about that, I think he cares about oil.”
Goldberg then spoke up, saying “As long as we are not sending troops into anybody else’s sovereign nation, then he can talk all he wants to. As long as there are no troops heading to Panama, to Greenland, to Canada… Mexico.”
“All of these are sovereign nations. And as long as they’re just talking, let ’em talk! As long as it stays that way, and we will not know that until we know it,” she concluded.
