There’s something about spooky islands in the middle of nowhere that we just can’t get enough of. We raved about the small but devout community of Crockett Island in Netflix’s miniseries Midnight Mass, but now another small island town has won our hearts — and our Emmy votes — this year: Katie Dippold’s comedy-horror series, Widow’s Bay.
Many standout TV shows earned awards at last night’s 2026 Emmys, but none made history like Widow’s Bay. Despite stiff competition in the Best Comedy category, including FX/Hulu’s The Bear, HBO Max’s Hacks, and ABC’s Abbott Elementary, Widow’s Bay won. In fact, the show won 13 additional awards, for a total of 14, surpassing The Studio‘s 13 awards last year and marking the most wins ever for a single season of a comedy show.

It’s no surprise that Dippold’s series won so many awards. Although Widow’s Bay had a modest debut with its first episode on April 29, it quickly gained momentum and became a must-watch series by the end of the first season, with standout performances from Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis, the skeptical mayor, and Kate O’Flynn as Patricia Moyer, his eccentric yet heartfelt assistant.
What makes Widow’s Bay stand out is how captivatingly different it is from what’s on TV right now. Its dry humor, a monster-of-the-week-like structure, and the terrific cast work in concert to make Widow’s Bay such compelling television. Describing the show any further would spoil the surprises that make Dippold’s comedy so effective — and why it won 14 Emmys in the first place.
