I can admit that I am in camp “don’t recline your seat” when flying. In my opinion, space is tight enough already—why encroach on someone’s personal space even more? But when I have been put in a situation where the person in front of me reclines, I roll my eyes and move on. Why? Because technically speaking, the seat reclines, and they have a right to do it.
A woman who took the liberty of doing so on a recent flight showed through TikTok that her choice cost her a restful flight. User @ameejau took to the social media platform to share a video of the woman behind her repeatedly and rather violently shoving her seat forward.

“Worst plane ride,” she simply captioned the video. Digging through the comments section, the flyer noted that the behavior was rather…persistent.
“I was turning around so many times and went to see the flight attendants. This woman continued through the whole [redacted] flight.”

People were furious for her and generally agreed that no matter what their stance was on reclining, it didn’t warrant that big of a reaction.
“I would have ended up on the no-fly list at 25 minutes into that flight,” commented one follower.

“I’m an airline pilot and this is NOT acceptable,” said another follower. “Call the cabin crew members, they OWN the cabin and will straighten this out ASAP.”
“As a flight attendant please call me for this,” added another. “This is the drama I live to get people removed from the flight for. Everybody has the right to recline, especially if it’s not mealtime!”
“As someone who hates when people recline their chairs, this is INSANE!! The seats are meant to recline. People PAID for their seats—they can do whatever they want! While it is annoying, you can’t be upset when people use the seats as they were designed,” said another.

Proper Etiquette Around Seat Reclining on Flights
Like everything under the sun, there is a time and place for reclining, and there is a way to do it respectfully. Here are a few do’s and don’ts you can live by:
- DON’T recline when it is mealtime. The person behind you has a right to eat their meal without interference.
- DO give the person behind you a heads up. Do not confuse this with asking for permission—just a quick “heads up, I’m reclining” would suffice.
You know what people statistically hate more than seat reclining? According to a 2022 study by Upgrade Points, Americans say “having the back of your seat kicked” is the number one annoyance while flying.
So really, who’s in the wrong here?
