Andrew Guest, the showrunner of Disney Plus’ Wonder Man, posted a video confirming that the series was canceled. More importantly, he placed blame for the cancellation on Marvel Studios and Disney’s current MCU plan, not the creatives involved in the production of Wonder Man.
While Marvel had announced a second season of Wonder Man earlier in the year, it was reported on July 28 that the show had been canceled. That caused speculation about why the show was canceled. Some wondered if it was due to production or scheduling complications with those involved, like Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton. In a TikTok video posted this weekend, Guest cleared things up.
“This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and Destin’s schedule, and no one’s schedule, was an issue,” Guest explained. “Yahya, Destin, Sir Ben, and I all loved making this show, all felt passionately about continuing to do it, and were eager to. Contracts were signed. Schedules were cleared. The writers’ room was supposed to start this week. The production was supposed to begin early next year, and there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did.”
As for what the plot of Wonder Man season 2 would’ve entailed, we still don’t know. Guest did say he had written a draft of the first episode and outlined where the season could’ve taken its characters. Now, he’s simply asking Emmy voters to recognize and award Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for his hard work and performance in the first season.
These comments make Wonder Man’s cancellation all the more brutal, as it seems to have even blindsided the people who made the first season and were eagerly planning to work on it again. Disney has not commented on Guest’s remarks or publicly discussed the cancellation of Wonder Man.
Right now, the only live-action MCU shows slated for Disney Plus are VisionQuest, out this October, and the third season of Daredevil: Born Again. The MCU’s primary focus once again appears to be on movies, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day making $355 million during its opening weekend.
