You can experience local art near Calgary in one of the province’s most beautiful places

15 September 20253 Mins Read

Regions on the West Coast of British Columbia, like Salt Spring and Gabriola Island, are internationally renowned for their tight-knit, independent artistic communities. But Alberta has its own area known for artistic craftsmanship, and it’s nestled nearby in the scenic southern foothills.

Driving down Highway 22 and Highway 2A, you’ll see plenty of small artisan shops and galleries marked by “turn here” signs. But have you ever gone exploring and popped your head into one of these whimsical sites showcasing local craftsmanship?

The Most Beautiful Art Tour in Alberta encourages Albertans to do just that. Taking place from Sept. 19 to 20 this year in Diamond Valley, a series of independently owned art shops and galleries will participate in this free showcase of prairie creatives.

This community of artists, craftspeople and galleries are incredibly tight-knit, interwoven by a shared sense of creativity and talent.

What to expect

Take a tour of the galleries and private studios located in the stunning scenery of the southern Alberta foothills with The Most Beautiful Art Tour in Alberta.

From Sept. 19 to 20, you’re invited to step into participating studio spaces and witness some of the home-grown talent and craft we have right here in Alberta.

This all-access event is organized annually, allowing you to experience private studios that are usually only welcome to the public by appointment.

Operating hours differ by venue, but this all-ages event has a complete schedule on its website with more details on what’s happening at each location, including:

  • Leighton Art Centre — 282027 144th St. W, Millarville
  • Bluerock Gallery – 110 Centre Ave. W, Diamond Valley
  • Blanca Botero — 120 Willow Ridge Link, Diamond Valley
  • Mady Thiel-Kopstein — 522 Robert St. SW, Diamond Valley
  • Firebrand Glass Studio — 634 3rd St. SW, Diamond Valley

Admission to each participating gallery and studio space is free, so you’ll have the opportunity to get a true taste of the art being created in the foothills of southern Alberta.

You’ll see stunning hand-blown glass, colourful beadwork, ceramic and textiles, and plenty of hand-painted works inspired by the surrounding Prairie views.

While admission is free for this family-friendly adventure, donations are welcome and appreciated at the non-profit Leighton Art Centre.

This weekend is perfect for adventure, and the artistic community of Alberta’s southern foothills is waiting for you to get inspired. We’ll see you out there!

When: Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, to Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025
Time: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; hours vary by venue
Where: Various participating locations
Cost: Free
