Blue sky, green thumbs, and turquoise water. The sunny season is here, and so is a rainbow of things to do, eat, and see. Our favourite colour? Bright red, a shade you will see a whole lot of at the Jungle Farm in Alberta.
Here, whether you crave strawberries, raspberries, or a deep purple Saskatoon berry, there are a ton of sweet treats to be picked, baked, or juiced.
Located in Red Deer, the Jungle Farm is a centennial family farm that grows a variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
In the fall, those who visit can grab the perfect pumpkin, but by the time summer rolls around, the property comes to life with everything from spinach and lettuce to onions, artichokes, and, of course, berries.
A beloved summer hangout
Want to check it out? At the time of publication, strawberries are now in season, but of limited quantity, but it will not be long until peak season.
The real fun starts in August when everything is ripe and ready, but do not hesitate.
Prime u-picking time will come and go before you know it, and you do not want to miss out, especially because you are almost definitely in for a great time.
This farm has been up and running for over 120 years, so to say they know what they are doing is an understatement.
“In the late 1800s, Jacob Daniel Quantz pioneered west from Ontario to Alberta. Jacob and his wife, Sophia Jane, homesteaded a quarter NE of the current farm,” the farm writes.
“In 1897, they bought and named the Jungle Farm. The farm name came from a brown bear that lived in the area.”
Since then, the farm has been passed down through generations and continues to thrive under its management.
If you would like to visit, keep an eye on its website, then pack up the car and head out.
You bring an appetite and some sunscreen, and they will give you a basket. Strawberries and raspberries start at $5.15 per lb., while saskatoons will only cost $4.85 per lb.
Please keep in mind that any u-pick farm is at the mercy of Mother Nature, and supply will fluctuate depending on the weather.
There is no telling what this season will bring, Alberta! But it will taste a heck of a lot better with fresh fruit.
