You can pick the perfect pumpkin at these Alberta farms this fall

There are plenty of signs that fall is arriving in Alberta, but a field full of pumpkins is probably one of the easiest to get excited about. Pumpkin patches are opening around the province for the season, which means it’s almost time to grab a wagon and start searching for the one you want to take home.

To save you some time, we’ve rounded up the best pumpkin patches to visit in Alberta this year, from sprawling farms to smaller family-run spots.

Calgary Farmyard’s Fall Days kick off on Friday, Sept. 11, with pumpkin picking, wagon rides, corn mazes and plenty of activities for the whole family. The event will run every weekend until Oct. 25, giving you plenty of time to head out and pick the perfect pumpkin.

And once you’re done with all the autumn activities, there’s still plenty to do around the farm. You can meet the farm animals, take a ride on the train, tackle the slides, or fly through the farm on ziplines.

About 25 minutes north of Red Deer near Lacombe, Kraay Family Farm is currently hosting its annual Pumpkin Days, where you can snag a pumpkin from the farm’s patch and check out fall displays around the property.

Afterwards, stick around for the farm’s 10-acre corn maze, jumping pillows, mini golf and giant games. This year, the farm is also raising money for Make-A-Wish, donating 100 per cent of pumpkin and flower sales to the organization.

Butterfield Acres in northwest Calgary is hosting its Harvest Pumpkin Fest every weekend in October. The event includes a pumpkin hunt for kids, where they can search the farm for their own mini pumpkins to take home, plus fall decorations and photo spots around the property.

While you’re there, you can also visit with the farm animals, go on a pony ride or take a tractor-pulled wagon through Scarecrow Alley. There are also fire pits where you can roast marshmallows and make s’mores.

The Pumpkin Palooza is returning to Cobbs Adventure Park just east of Calgary, running every weekend throughout October. The event has pumpkin picking, seasonal photo ops and plenty of adorable animals to interact with.

The park is home to more than 100 kangaroos and wallabies, plus sloths, alpacas, emus and goats. And you can also hop on a tractor, race around on pedal carts, or play a round of black light mini golf.

Fall is a big deal at Granary Road, with its Fall Pumpkin Fest returning on weekends from Saturday, Sept. 19 to Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026. Along with picking out your own pumpkin, you can wander through the corn maze, take a hay ride and listen to live music.

Once you’re finished in the patch, head over to Granary Road’s Active Learning Park, where you’ll find giant play structures, interactive exhibits and plenty of hands-on activities. There’s also an on-site farmers market with local produce and other goodies.

On Saturday, Sept. 12 and Sunday, Sept. 13, the Saskatoon Farm is hosting its annual Harvest Market, with more than 100 local vendors, live music, food trucks and plenty of fall activities.

You’ll also be able to pick your own pumpkin, check out carnival games, hop on a tractor-drawn wagon ride or grab a bite from the bakery or restaurant.

The Bowden Sunmaze sits between Calgary and Edmonton, where you’ll find a giant sunflower maze with more than 10 kilometres of pathways to explore. Come fall, the farm also opens its pumpkin patch, where you can pick your own and wander through the fields. You can also check out the U-pick gardens, which have fresh flowers and vegetables available throughout the season.

Prairie Gardens is putting a spooky spin on pumpkin season with its Haunted Pumpkin Festival, happening throughout October at the farm near Bon Accord, about 45 minutes north of Edmonton. You can pick your own pumpkin, explore the haunted corn maze, and check out the seasonal photo ops.

When: Open Monday to Sunday
Time: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: 56311 Lily Lake Rd., Bon Accord, Alta.
Cost: $21 per person

Just southwest of Edmonton, Somerset Farms is a great spot to pick your own pumpkin without spending a ton, with admission costing just $5 per person. You can head into the field and choose your favourite, with plenty of different shapes and sizes to pick from.

When: Open Tuesday to Sunday
Time: Tuesday to Friday: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: 1423 Township Rd. 514, Parkland County, Alta.
Cost: $5 per person

Blue Grass Nursery is hosting its annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, with plenty to do beyond picking out a pumpkin. You can paint or carve pumpkins, make your way through a giant straw maze and check out the petting zoo.

There will also be pony rides, food trucks, and a giant pumpkin smash, with proceeds from the events going towards the Alberta Children’s Hospital Trust Fund.

Fall doesn’t last very long in Alberta, so might as well make the most of it while you can! Pick a weekend, grab your people, and head out for some fall fun on the farm.
