You can walk through the middle of a glacial erratic on a scenic trail in Alberta

7 June 20253 Mins Read

Wild Rose Country has some jaw-dropping sights, but nestled in the Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area is an Alberta gem beckoning adventure seekers who don’t want to break a sweat.

Located only five minutes from Grande Cache, a charming hamlet in the mountains, you’ll find a giant marker that has wowed visitors from far and wide.

Affectionately named The Crack of Doom, this unique landmark is a highlight of the Alberta Trail that hardcore runners may recognize from the Canadian Death Race.

On what they call the CD5 route, those who are daring enough can trek through the middle of a massive erratic, which was left over from the glacial period and split in two.

How to get there

According to Greenview Tourism, this larger-than-life rock is quite easy to get to if you’re not participating in the notoriously difficult race.

There is no sign, but it is just a short walk west from the Sulphur Gates Campground.

Once at the staging area, head past corral one and follow the path. It will not be long until you see the ancient boulder in all its glory.

As mentioned, the stone will only take a few minutes to reach, but if you’d like to stay and explore, there is a ton more to do in the district of Greenview — home of the Provincial Park.

“From hiking through the Crack of Doom to mountain biking along Griffiths Trail or any of the 2,700 km of trails ranging from short treks to multiday backpacking, there’s an action-packed day awaiting anyone willing to adventure to Greenview,” they write.

“For the thrill-seeking visitor, try Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park Bike Park. Enjoy a backcountry horseback excursion by heading to one of the staging areas in the region, providing easy access into the Willmore Wilderness Park.”

Along the way, keep your eyes open for deer, elk, bears, mountain goats, and the birds of prey that also roam the area, but do not forget to look down too!

Alberta Health Services says that some wandering through the park might see dinosaur tracks left over 65 million years ago.

Here’s to an exciting trip and some wickedly cool photos.

It could be pretty eye-opening.
