Your dog could be in a Metro Vancouver production of ‘Annie’ this holiday season

18 July 20253 Mins Read

Calling all dog owners and lovers! If you have or know of a furry friend with star quality and can follow basic cues, Gateway Theatre is looking to cast a Sandy to appear in its upcoming production of Annie. While local acting hopefuls may not be on the roll call for this production, this could be your dog’s time to shine.

“We’re on the lookout for dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds to take part in our production of Annie this holiday season,” shares the local theatre group. “Whether they’re camera shy or full of personality, we want to see your furry friends.”

What are the requirements?

To successfully audition, dogs must be based in the Lower Mainland, be friendly and well-behaved, and, of course, be comfortable around children and crowds of people. Your pup will also need to be okay with loud noises and music without startling easily or barking repeatedly.

Finally, Gateway Theatre adds the following basic cues to its checklist: the ability to sit, stay, follow, lie down, and come. Nail those down, and you’re golden.

Any other fun tricks or skills are the cherry on top. So if you’re working on anything with your furry friend at the moment, this audition could be the perfect chance to put it to the test.

“Our dream is to bring their full potential out on stage,” notes Gateway Theatre.

When are auditions?

Auditions will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025, at Gateway Theatre in Richmond (6500 Gilbert Rd.).

Annie will run from Dec. 11, 2025, to Jan. 3, 2026, with rehearsals commencing on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025. Exact rehearsal dates and times will be clarified upon successful casting.

How to apply

Think your pooch has what it takes? Send Gateway Theatre an email ([email protected]) introducing your dog to the team, and include their very best picture or two. You’ll want to address your email to Aldana Padron, the office and artistic coordinator at Gateway Theatre, who will be fielding submissions.

Ensure your email includes your name, your dog’s name, your dog’s temperament, extreme sensitivities or triggers (e.g. bright lights or sounds), and any accessibility requests you may have.

Submissions will be accepted until next week on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

Good luck!
