There’s a very specific window in Calgary when you can eat outside without sweating through your clothes or losing feeling in your fingers, and we’re in it right now. The leaves are starting to change, but the sun is still shining, so there’s no better time to get outside and enjoy a picnic.
There are parks along the river, gardens tucked into the inner city, and wooded trails that offer spots to sit down with your food. And with so many options around the city, it can feel overwhelming trying to pick just one.
Here are 10 spots we think are worth bringing your picnic to this fall.
Bowness Park has been a Calgary favourite for more than a century, and it’s easy to see why once you’re by the lagoon. The shallow water winds through the park, with trees lining the paths and plenty of picnic areas around the shore. You can rent a paddleboat or kayak, then grab some food and find a spot by the water.

Tucked into northwest Calgary, the Botanical Gardens of Silver Springs has more than 30 garden rooms spread throughout the BirthPlace Forest.
The space is completely volunteer-run, and in the fall it transforms into a colourful mix of changing trees and late-season blooms. Picnic tables are available at the Fruit Grove and Oak Grove, so you can bring lunch and sit among the gardens.

Carburn has two man-made ponds surrounded by trees, trails and wildflowers, with picnic tables and benches dotted around the park. Bring your lunch, find a spot beside the water, and keep an eye out for the wildlife that calls the park home. More than 230 bird species have been recorded here, including swans, wood ducks, and pelicans.

Prince’s Island Park is a little patch of green in the middle of downtown Calgary. For a fall picnic, the pathways around the island give you a front-row view of the changing leaves, with Calgary’s skyline sitting just beyond the trees.

Reader Rock Garden started as a bare hillside more than 100 years ago, and Calgary Parks superintendent William Reader transformed it into the gardens you can explore today.
This historic site has ponds, bridges, pathways, and more than 4,000 plants spread throughout the space.

Edworthy Park has some gorgeous views of downtown Calgary, especially from the higher areas of the park. The space has picnic tables, shelters, and BBQ stands, so if you’re bringing a larger group, this is a great pick.
The park is also home to two tennis courts and several parks spread throughout the space. If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat after your meal, head to Lic’s Ice Cream Shop, just down the street.

If you want to do more than just eat your picnic, Pearce Estate Park has you covered. The park has picnic tables, fire pits, pathways, and open green space, plus a reconstructed wetland with ponds and streams to explore.
The Bow Habitat Visitor Centre and Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery are right next door, where you can learn more about the river and its wildlife.

Bringing your dog along for the picnic? Laycock Park has an off-leash area where your four-legged friend can stretch their legs before or after lunch. The park also has a covered picnic shelter, benches, and pathways running along Nose Creek.

Just north of Bowness Park, Baker Park stretches along the Bow River with 12 hectares of grass, trees and pathways. Benches line the water, and some spots even offer mountain views. In the fall, the trees along the river change to a bright orange, making it an especially nice place to enjoy a picnic.
After you finish eating, you can follow the pathways through the park or play a round on the disc golf course, which winds through the park.

Grab your picnic, then go make some noise. South Glenmore Park is home to the Quinterra Legacy Garden, an outdoor music garden where you can play a collection of instruments.
When you’re done with the spontaneous park concert, you can explore playgrounds, picnic tables, and pathways around the Glenmore Reservoir.

Now all that’s left to do is pick a park, pack some snacks and hope that Calgary gives us a few more sunny days before the season changes!
