In the warm summer months of 1960, a bright eighteen-year-old high school kid named Ernest Evans walked into a tiny Philadelphia recording studio. Known to his close friends as a wholesome local singer, he was given the incredibly catchy stage name Chubby
Working incredibly quickly, Checker recorded his iconic vocal track in just forty-five minutes. He carefully mimicked Ballard’s soulful vocal style note-for-note but added a much faster, high-energy pop tempo to the mix. The final result was pure musical magic. When the track hit the radio airwaves, it sparked an immediate, massive global dance craze. Teenagers and adults alike fell completely in love with the simple dance routine, moving their bodies as if they were trying to put a cigarette out on the floor.
On September 19, 1960, the energetic cover version officially conquered the music charts and hit the coveted number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Checker instantly became a massive pop sweetheart and a global cultural icon. But the true miracle of this particular track happened a couple of years later. In January 1962, the exact same recording climbed the pop charts all over again, hitting number one for a historic second time.
It was the first single in music history to achieve two completely separate number one chart runs.
What started as a quick, forty-five-minute recording session by an ordinary teenage boy transformed global pop culture forever, proving that a timeless classic can easily unite the world on the dance floor today. It is truly an unbelievable milestone.
