1966 Career-Defining Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 60 Years Ago Today

6 April 20262 Mins Read

Sixty years ago today, the iconic ’60s rock duo the Righteous Brothers topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their song, “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration.”

Released in 1966, the hit served as the lead single and title track for the duo’s seventh studio album, Soul and Inspiration. Within a month of its release, “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration” climbed to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, holding the top position for three consecutive weeks.

The same year of its release, the track achieved a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after selling over one million copies. Its undeniable chart dominance and commercial success marked it as career-defining song for the duo.

The track followed the success of their 1965 No. 1 hit, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” a song that helped to solidify the duo’s signature blue-eyed soul sound. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the legendary songwriters credited on their 1965 hit, also co-wrote “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration.” Remarkably, Bill Medley produced the track himself, effectively paralleling the “Wall of Sound” production style they had utilized under their previous producer, Phil Spector.

“(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration” is a ballad centered on intense romantic dependence and the heartache experienced after a broken relationship. The track highlights themes of desperation, following a narrator who relies heavily on a partner for their emotional needs. The poignant lyricism showcases total devotion, creating a definite breakup anthem of the era.

Despite being released six decades ago, the Righteous Brothers’ hit continues to resonate with modern audiences in the streaming era. On Spotify alone, “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration” has garnered nearly 16 million streams, affirming its enduring legacy as a soul classic.
