1970 Drama, Featuring 4 Tammy Wynette Songs, Is Just as Powerful 56 Years Later

15 September 20264 Mins Read

In September 1970, Jack Nicholson became a movie star. The actor, whose six-decade career would later include The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and The Departed, announced himself as a leading man in director Bob Rafelson’s road drama Five Easy Pieces.

The film, which premiered at the New York Film Festival one day before hitting theaters on Sept. 12, 1970, stars Nicholson as Robert Dupea, a blue-collar eccentric with a white-collar past. The son of a celebrated classical musician, Bobby was raised on a wealthy island in Puget Sound, Washington, as a musical prodigy.

Overwhelmed by the pressure and privilege, however, he abandons that life for a simpler existence that includes working on oil rigs, drinking beer, and bowling with buddies in California. When he’s forced to return home because of his father’s illness, all the unresolved pieces of his identity force him to confront his family and the life he rejected.

Before Nicholson became synonymous with the larger-than-life performances that would define much of his later career, his performance as Bobby showcased supreme subtlety, quiet heartache, and tightly coiled restraint, perhaps most notably in a scene singled out as his breakthrough.

The emotional peak occurs when Bobby breaks down into tears in a field while talking to his stroke-paralyzed father. According to IMDb, Nicholson wrote parts of the monologue himself, adding an extra layer of personal vulnerability that stunned critics and helped secure his first Best Actor Oscar nomination.

Another famous scene originated with Rafelson before screenwriter Carol Eastman added her own flourish: the now-iconic diner confrontation in which Bobby tries to order toast as a side item but is met with the dreaded “no substitutions.” In response, he sarcastically orders a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, demanding she hold the mayo, lettuce, and chicken.

“The only scene of mine that Carol really used in its entirety was the scene with Jack at the luncheon counter—‘no substitutions’—and there she added the ultimate flourish of Jack wiping the table clean,” Rafelson told Sight and Sound. “What I was really drawn to obviously was studying that character; but for every character in a movie, I like to think of how that character would behave in another movie, or in his own movie. My interest is not totally involved in the principals, but in every small character as well.”

Roger Ebert once called Nicholson’s performance a “masterpiece of heartbreaking intensity,” portraying Bobby as a restless man whose bravado masks profound insecurity. Ultimately, Bobby remains one of cinema’s most famous antiheroes—a man who rejects every path available to him because he can’t accept himself.

The tension Bobby experiences even runs through the film’s music. Bobby’s working-class world is filled with Tammy Wynette, while the family home is steeped in Bach, Chopin, and Mozart. Four Wynette songs—“Stand by Your Man,” “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” “When There’s a Fire in Your Heart,” and “Don’t Touch Me”—appear alongside five classical works, including Fantasy in F Minor, Op. 49 and Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue in D Minor, creating a musical divide that mirrors Bobby’s fractured identity.

The following year, Five Easy Pieces was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The film walked away without a win but has since become a profound watch over the decades.

A remarkably intimate character study of class, identity, and alienation, the film remains as unsettling and emotionally potent now as it was when it arrived in theaters 56 years ago.
