1989 Hit Ranked Among Garth Brooks’ ‘Best Songs’ of All Time Debuted 37 Years Ago Today

6 March 20263 Mins Read

37 Years Ago Today, on March 6, 1989, Garth Brooks released his debut single, “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old).” At the time, the Oklahoma-bred star had not yet been a household name in the country music genre, but he was well on his way to becoming a massive success as the tune put him on the charts — just not quite at the top.

“Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, giving Brooks his first Top 10 single. That feat paved the way for even more milestones. The tune belongs on Brooks’ self-titled debut album, Garth Brooks, which spawned three No. 1 hits, including “Not Counting You,” “If Tomorrow Never Comes,” and “The Dance.”

Garth Brooks Is a Co-Writer on the Track

Co-written by Brooks and collaborator and friend Randy Taylor, and produced by Allen Reynolds, “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” finds the seven-time CMA Entertainer of the Year winner, 64, singing about the rodeo life and longing to hang up the saddle and return home to his family.

“And the white line’s getting longer and the saddle’s getting cold / I’m much too young to feel this damn old / All my cards are on the table with no ace left in the hole / I’m much too young to feel this damn old,” Brooks sings throughout the chorus of the song, which features neo-traditional sounds of picking acoustic guitars, soft violins, a simple drum beat and pedal/steel.

The Song Helped Launch Another Career

Interestingly, the song also name checks late singer and former bareback champion Chris LeDoux, on the lyrics: “The worn out tape of Chris LeDoux, lonely women and bad booze.”

The subtle name drop helped launch a music career for LeDoux, whose songs back then were unknown to a majority of the public. The mention of his name eventually led to a deal with Capitol Records.

Though “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” didn’t become a No. 1, the song has been hailed as one of Brooks’ greatest of all time on various best-of lists, including Hollar.Country’s 2026 listing of the country legend’s top dozen hits and Billboard’s 2017 top 10 picks. The tune has become one of Brooks’ personal favorites from his lengthy catalog.

In the liner notes of his second compilation album, The Hits, Brooks wrote, “’Much Too Young’ will always be my sentimental favorite because it was my very first single. It was a baby that I watched grow up.”

“Whenever I hear it today, I have a smile on my face. I want to give a big thanks to Randy Taylor and Chris LeDoux,” he added. “Randy was the writer, and Chris was probably the reason that it was played….”
