National Anthem Singer's Technical Issue Leads to Cool Moment During NHL Game

1 May 20264 Mins Read

A microphone failure before a major NHL playoff game unexpectedly created one of the most heartwarming sports moments of the week after Buffalo Sabres fans joined together to help singer Cami Clune finish “O Canada” during Game 5 against the Boston Bruins.

The emotional scene took place at KeyBank Center on Thursday, before the first-round Stanley Cup Playoff matchup between the Buffalo Sabres and the Bruins.

Just seconds into Clune’s performance of the Canadian national anthem, her microphone repeatedly cut out. Instead of awkward silence filling the arena, thousands of fans instantly stepped in and sang the anthem with her.

The moment quickly spread online after TNT Sports US shared video clips of the crowd singing along to the song while Clune smiled through the technical problems. Fans online praised the Buffalo crowd for turning what could have been an embarrassing situation into a powerful show of unity.

Clune later responded to the viral clip herself, writing, “That’s me singing!🥹Buffalo had my back, GO SABRES💙💛 ”

She also shared her gratitude on Instagram, posting, “What a crazy but cool moment!! Thank you all for singing along,” before adding, “We have the best fans ever!”

The Sabres have long played “O Canada” before home games because Buffalo sits close to the Canadian border and has strong ties to nearby Ontario. Even when a visiting NHL team is not from Canada, the anthem remains part of the team’s game-night tradition.

That tradition made the crowd’s response even more meaningful. Most of the nearly 19,000 fans inside the arena were American, but they confidently sang the Canadian anthem from start to finish while Clune’s microphone faded in and out.

The unexpected singalong became one of the most talked-about moments from the NHL playoffs this week. Clips shared by the Sabres, Clune, and NHL-related accounts collected hundreds of thousands of views across social media platforms.

Fans from both the United States and Canada flooded comment sections with emotional reactions.

One user wrote, “I guess there is still some faith left in society after all. Love to see it.”

Another added, “Buffalo to the rescue! 💯❤️”

A third comment praised the atmosphere inside the arena, saying, “Absolutely incredible. Buffalo loaded with real ones. Respect!!! ❤️❤️❤️”

Others joked that the city’s reputation received a boost from the moment, with one fan writing, “Buffalo just gained some aura 📈📈”

Another reaction read, “Pure class Buffalo!!! Well done 👏👏👏”

One viewer also pointed out how unusual the scene was in an all-American matchup, posting, “Never seen the Canadian anthem sung at a USA vs USA game. Love it!!”

Who Is Cami Clune?

Clune is no stranger to performing in front of large audiences. The Buffalo native rose to national attention during Season 19 of The Voicein 2020. During her blind audition, she earned a rare four-chair turn and a coach block, making her one of the standout contestants that season.

She originally chose John Legend as her coach before eventually joining Kelly Clarkson’s team after Clarkson used her steal during the knockout round. Clune later advanced to the semifinals.

Outside television, Clune has become a familiar voice in Buffalo sports. She serves as the official anthem singer for the Sabres and has also performed at Buffalo Bills games, NASCAR events and other major sporting events.

Tuesday’s emotional anthem moment happened before a tense playoff game that ended in disappointment for Buffalo fans. The Bruins defeated the Sabres 2-1 in overtime to stay alive in the series.

Defenseman Rasmus Dahlin scored early for Buffalo before Elias Lindholm tied the game in the second period. David Pastrnak later scored the overtime winner.

Even with the loss, the Sabres still lead the playoff series 3-2 as they continue trying to win their first playoff series in nearly two decades.

For many fans, though, the loudest moment of the night happened before the puck ever dropped.
