Here’s what’s filming in Alberta this fall

27 August 20253 Mins Read

This summer’s been a hot one for the Alberta film industry, and things aren’t cooling off anytime soon.

There’s been plenty on the docket for ACTRA Alberta and the film industry at large, with filming for the 19th season of Murdoch Mysteries and a special themed Calgary Stampede episode wrapping up this August.

But Alberta’s blooming local film industry will continue to unfurl heading into September. Here’s what’s currently shooting in and around the province.

My Life With the Walter Boys – Season 3

Filming for the third season of Netflix’s My Life with the Walter Boys began in early August and will wrap up on Dec. 1 in the Calgary surrounding area.

The show premiered in 2023 as a coming-of-age drama that follows teenage orphan Jackie Howard, who relocates to rural Colorado from Manhattan. She’s taken in by the Walter family, a group with seven sons and one daughter.

The show is adapted from Ali Novak’s 2014 novel My Life with the Walter Boys, which was originally published on Wattpad.

Alberta offers the perfect backdrop for the scenic mountains and hills of rural Colorado depicted in the show. We can’t wait to see how it all shows up on screen!

Anna Pigeon – Season 1

Production for the USA Network’s Anna Pigeon began in July, and filming will continue into November 2025.

The series focuses on Anna Pigeon, a woman who flees her traumatic past by becoming a park ranger. As events unfold, Pigeon finds herself embroiled in a series of crimes in the backdrop of the American wilderness.

The show will premiere sometime in 2026 as an adaptation of Nevada Barr’s bestselling crime novels. We can’t wait to see how Alberta’s mountains and forests are utilized in scenes with this resourceful character.

A productive summer

It’s been a jam-packed summer for film crews in and around Alberta, with the 19th season of Heartland wrapping up near Kananaskis, and that special Calgary Stampede-themed episode of Murdoch Mysteries also touching down this past August.

Season 3 of the Western drama Billy the Kid was also filmed in and around Calgary, along with the Colleen Hoover adaptation of Reminders of Him.

Things have been a little slow to pick up again after the 2023 Hollywood strikes impacted production. But with Alberta’s proximity to the Rocky Mountains and a unique cowboy-themed city culture, the province of plenty offers a lot to brag about on screen.

Bill C-11, which passed in April 2023, is also creating more opportunities for Indigenous filmmakers. The Bill specifies that Canadian broadcasters must provide opportunities to Indigenous communities to produce programming.

How excited are we to see Alberta show up on the silver screen this fall? Keep your eyes peeled!
