5 Ontario towns to visit to tour where your favourite movies and TV shows were filmed, Canada Reviews

Ontario features in plenty of blockbuster films and highly-rated TV shows — it’s just usually playing a part, just like the actors. From our smallest towns to our most bustling cities, this province is called Hollywood North for a reason. From horror movie IT to The Handmaid’s Tale and The Boys, many of your favourite productions filmed here — so take a road trip to these Ontario towns to relive the movie magic! And, there is no show that’s had a bigger impact on the local day trip trade than Sterling Point, which is shining a huge light on the Muskoka Lakes district.

Here are six tours that will guide you through the real-life filming locations of popular shows and movies. 

Sterling Point in Muskoka Lakes and Caledon

One of the hottest new shows on Prime Video was filmed in Ontario. Sterling Point, the coming-of-age drama created by local filmmaker Megan Park, follows twins who inherit a mysterious lakeside property in the fictional community of Sterling Point.

While Sterling Point itself is fictional, the gorgeous Muskoka landscape featured throughout the series does. Much of the show was filmed in Muskoka, including Lake Joseph and Mortimer’s Point Marina on Lake Muskoka, with additional filming at Sparrow Lake Camp and in the Caledon area in the small town of Glen Williams.

There isn’t an official Sterling Point tour, but fans can explore the real Muskoka locations that inspired the show’s setting. And, fall is one of the best possible times. Our suggestion: drive north and tour the small towns of Bala, Port Carling and Rosseau. These three towns are quintessentially Muskoka. Take a side tour off the highway between Bala and Port Carling for a stop at Mortimer’s Point Marina, which is a great spot for coffee. Another great option is to book a tour on a Muskoka steamship that will give visitors are great look at all the stunning Muskoka spots featured on the show and then some. 

Murdoch Mysteries in Kingston, Coburg and more

Fans of the 18-season Canadian drama series Murdoch Mysteries can join fellow Murdochians on a seven-day tour across Ontario to top filming locations — including Port Hope, Kingston, Coburg and even the actual filming set! Some special guests from the cast may join you too. 

IT in Port Hope

Lovers of Stephen King will enjoy this walking tour of Port Hope, known as “the real life Derry, Maine” — the fictional small town where IT, the child-snatching clown Pennywise, lurks. Tour all the film locations from IT and IT: Chapter Two, including spots that will feature in Welcome to Derry, out in fall 2025.

The Handmaid’s Tale in Cambridge

Fancy a dystopian walk through the Republic of Gilead? Emmy Award–winning series The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, was filmed all over charming Cambridge, Ont. Retrace Elisabeth Moss and Alexis Bledel’s footsteps through iconic locations from the series, including “The Wall.”

The Boys, Suits, Degrassi, Star Trek and more in Toronto

A popular guided tour in Toronto will take you the real-life locations of so many of your favourite shows all over the city.
