A historic downtown in B.C. has transformed into a Christmas village that’s free to enjoy

9 December 20252 Mins Read

There’s nothing more alluring during the holidays than walking down the festive streets of a historic downtown, adorned with twinkling lights and holiday displays. And that’s exactly what you’ll find roaming Chilliwack’s District 1881.

A historic and vibrant hub known for its European-inspired narrow streets, picturesque window shopping, and array of local businesses, the district is all the more charming during the holiday season. Its massive Christmas tree is at the centre of the district and the holiday magic.

Now in its fifth year, the holiday festivities in District 1881 have only gotten bigger and better, created by Algra Bros Development Ltd. and Envision Financial.

With some construction still on-site downtown, there is no space for rides this year. However, there’s plenty of live entertainment, roaming characters, choirs, and festive characters to meet this holiday season.

At “Sasquatch Alley,” across from Hunnis, you’ll find the opportunity to snap a photo with Santa on a first-come, first-served basis from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and until 7 p.m. on weekends. From Tuesday to Thursday, festive photos with Santa are by donation, and from Friday to Sunday, photos are $40 per group.

Retail stores are open at District 1881 until 8 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday.

Note that pets are welcome at District 1881, though some individual stores may not be pet-friendly. Two-hour parking can be found on site, as well as a handful of day parking lots surrounding District 1881.

Ready to take in the magic? You can roam the illuminated, decorated streets of District 1881 until the second week of January 2026.

When: On display until the second week of January 2026
Time: Stores open until 8 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday
Where: District 1881, Chilliwack
Cost: Free admission
