Toronto just had a record-breaking snowfall and the city looks unreal

26 January 20264 Mins Read

If you have yet to go outside, you’re in for a huge surprise, Toronto. The city was hit with over 50 cm of snow following a record-breaking winter storm that dominated parts of southern Ontario on Sunday. Despite the extreme weather, Torontonians had to see the action for themselves and shared their POVs on social media. We’ve gathered a few of the most jaw-dropping displays of winter magic and some that even made us question why we didn’t book a tropical vacation earlier.

Record-breaking snow in Toronto

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Toronto Pearson Airport saw a daily total snowfall of 46 cm on Sunday, making it the highest daily total on record.

“This brings the January 2026 snowfall total to 88.2 cm, which is the snowiest January and snowiest month since records began in 1937,” shared the agency in a weather summary.

All the stated snow amounts are as of 5 a.m, unless otherwise noted. As for the rest of the area, here’s their snowfall amounts:

  • Toronto City Centre – 56 cm
  • Toronto Pearson Airport – 46 cm
  • Ontario Storm Prediction Centre Downsview – 32 cm (5:30 p.m. Sunday)
  • Mississauga – Milton – 30 cm to 46 cm
  • Brampton – 18 cm (as of 1 a.m.)

Needless to say, Toronto saw the most snow in the region, and now, we’re dealing with the aftermath. For some residents in the city, they get to enjoy a snow day due to school closures, school bus cancellations and office closures, but for others, it’s still business as usual.

Unfortunately, that means bundling up, heading out early, and facing the monstrous amounts of snow. Here’s what some of you shared on X this morning:

Yesterday‘s storm broke Toronto’s record for the largest snowfall in a single day and it’s going to take some time to dig out. The City has a snow plow contract that must be changed, along with a need for improved communications, more staff and equipment, along with more removal… pic.twitter.com/TVJczfDKpc

I, for one, got to stay home today, but that didn’t stop me from checking out all the action last night.

My car isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

And a few more X users shared their experiences last night, too!

Perfect example of the amount of snow Toronto received.

Downtown #Toronto just experienced their snowiest day EVER, previous record stood for 82 years.

Probably more than 60 cm of snow to wrap up this storm, biggest one day snowfall for Toronto since 1944 (44 cm). pic.twitter.com/uRkYankLgY

There’s no doubt that the city looks absolutely unreal, almost like a page out of a picture book.

For a brief moment, Toronto felt quieter, frozen in time. And for a city like ours, moments like these are rare. Make the most of it.
