The reign of Empress Elisabeth is coming to an end. Netflix has confirmed that the hit German historical drama The Empress (Die Kaiserin) will return for a third and final season this year with a scheduled drop at the end of 2026.
The announcement was made today at Netflix’s What Next? 2026 showcase in Berlin, where the streamer unveiled a slate of new German productions set to release throughout the year. While fans will be relieved to know the story continues, the news remains bittersweet, as it confirms that the upcoming six-episode batch will serve as the series finale.
Historically, Netflix has released big costume dramas during the holiday corridor. Given the “Fall/Winter” timeline mentioned at the Berlin event, a release in November or December 2026 seems the most likely target.
Since its debut, The Empress has been one of Netflix’s most successful German-language series, captivating audiences with its lavish costumes and the intense chemistry between Devrim Lingnau (Elisabeth) and Philip Froissant (Franz). Season 2, which launched in November 2024, spent five weeks in the global top 10s. Since 2023, and covering viewership through 2025, seasons 1 and 2 have amassed 424 million hours watched on Netflix, equating to over 76 million views.

In case you missed it, Netflix renewed the series for a third and final season back in January 2025. Filming took place throughout the second half of 2025 and we even got some early shots of production taking place in Spain.
Here are some minor updates to what we know about the final chapter.
What will happen in The Empress Season 3?
If the first two seasons were about the romance and the struggle for control at court, the final season appears to be about the unraveling of the empire and the couple themselves.
According to the official synopsis released by Netflix today the story picks up in the aftermath of the Sardinian War. Emperor Franz returns from the front lines a broken man, described as “traumatized” and “burdened by the guilt of losing thousands of young men.”
While Elisabeth strives to save both her marriage and the empire, she faces insurmountable resistance at court. Complicating matters is her declining health—a historical detail well known to Sisi scholars. These pressures eventually compel her to leave Vienna, setting off the restless travels she would become famous for in later life.
Netflix teases a dramatic conclusion, saying, “In the six-part finale of this thrilling series, Elisabeth will make a fateful acquaintance that will forever alter her life and the future of Europe.”
