After spending almost all four episodes chasing his mysterious Lady in Silver, who’s right in front of him all along, Benedict continues to stop at nothing to find her. She’s the one person that gives him a motivation to enter society rather than skulking on the outskirts. He gets everyone on the case, from his mother Violet, to his crafty sister Eloise. In addition, Lady Whistledown writes about it extensively, and the search even piques the interest of Queen Charlotte. But he still does not find her.

Of course, the mysterious lady is Sophie Baek, the illegitimate daughter of an earl. Upon her father’s death, she’s taken in by her stepmother Araminta Gun, becoming a maid in her home and serving her two daughters. Working as a maid is the only shield she has, but she yeans for more, which leads her to Lady Bridgerton’s masquerade ball, where she ultimately crosses paths with Benedict.

Despite knowing that she’s being pursued by Benedict Bridgerton, she holds back on revealing herself. In fact, she disassociates with her facade. However, when Araminta finds out about her sneaking into the masquerade ball and her relations with Benedict, she banishes Sophie and damages her reputation, meaning she must leave Mayfair to find work elsewhere.

By a stroke of divine luck (and plot conveniences), it’s not long before Sophie bumps into Benedict once more. After saving her, and injuring himself in the process, Benedict falls in love with Sophie, unknowing that she was the Lady in Silver, and they spend time together in My Cottage, with both Mr and Mrs. Crabtree. They flirt, and even kiss, but Benedict does not make the connection. He cannot keep away from Sophie; they are drawn together.

Sophie ultimately takes up a lady’s maid position at Bridgerton House. She’s offered the role by Violet after recommendation of Benedict. At the end of Part 1, Benedict becomes so infatuated by Sophie that she becomes almost as desirable to him as the Lady in Silver. But he does not see her as a wife; taking a maid for a wife with be a scandal of the utmost highest.

In the final moments of the season, Benedict makes her an offer: to be his mistress. “You deserve everything, and I want to give you as much as I can… be my mistress,” Benedict says. The offer is obviously insulting to Sophie, who storms off into the night.

Lady Violet Bridgerton and Marcus Anderson

Lady Violet Bridgerton lost her husband, Edmund, many years ago, and she’s struggled to move on ever since. However, in Marcus Anderson, she finds someone outside of the family structure who’s willing to love her for who she is, but also to take things slow. He sees her as a woman rather than a socialite. He treats her with kindness and accepts her hesitation to jump into things.

Throughout these four episodes, Violet slowly but surely comes out of her shell. She re-finds love and the mischievous and cheeky nature that comes with it. The companionship rejuvenates her. It’s about moving on, finding closure, but not forgetting Edmund. By the end of episode 4, she feels settled with Marcus, rekindling love through touch and intimacy. Their relationship is still largely unannounced within the Ton.

Francesca and John

Francesca has a happy marriage with John. They have a stable, calm and peaceful relationship. There’s mutual respect between them and a strong sense emotional safety. The opening four episodes develop their relationship well, also exploring Francesca’s issues with intimacy.

They love each other, but when that love gets intimate, Francesca struggles to find a physical climax. She seeks help — sometimes awkwardly — from her mother. It’s not the love or loyalty that’s missing, but the physical manifestation of it, and it’s something that Francesca herself desperately attempts to change.

In one of the final scenes of Part 1, both Francesca and John are joined by John’s cousin Michaela, a character particularly important for Francesca’s future. We won’t spoil anything about the show’s future here, but it’s worth keeping an eye on Michaela in the upcoming instalments. Francesca’s story in the opening episodes lays a solid groundwork for what’s to come.

Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and a new Lady-in-Waiting

One of the most interesting plot lines this season comes when Lady Danbury requests to step down as lady-in-waiting to Queen Charlotte. She absently makes the request during the Bridgerton Masquerade Ball, and the Queen strictly denies the request. She simply cannot rule without Danbury beside her. The request hurts them in different ways; Lady Danbury cannot get a chance of freedom to explore things she never got a chance to do, and Queen Charlotte is saddened by the idea.
Of course, both Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte have a long and emotional history, one that’s chronicled in detail in prequel spinoff Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Danbury is brutally truthful and open with Charlotte. She’s a buffer and understands the human side of ruling. Without Agatha Danbury by her side, Queen Charlotte would feel lost.

Even so, Danbury continues to explore options for a new lady-in-waiting, and she persuades Alice Mondrich to take up the position. She’s a worthy choice. She’s not subtle, and she’s as strong-willed as opinionated as anyone in Mayfair. If Danbury cannot be around, Alice is exactly what Queen Charlotte needs. While Alice is not wholly taken by the notion of being Queen Charlotte’s lady-in-waiting — “I am not of this world,” she says — Danbury seems to convince her to take up the mantle.

Final twist: Araminta Gun and her family move next door

When Sophie was fired by Araminta, she was left with next to nothing. But she fell on her feet, ultimately working as a maid inside Bridgerton House, where she’s highly valued by Violet Bridgerton (and strikes up a bond with Eloise in the process). While Araminta does not know of Sophie’s whereabouts now, she’s bound to find out sooner rather than later, especially since she and her family have moved home right next to Bridgerton House.

Moreover, following the shift in maids around Mayfair (which came in the fallout of Sophie being released by Araminta), maid Mrs Varley grew increasingly dismayed at the treatment and undervaluation in the Featherington household. As a result, she has now moved in with Araminta.

The pieces are all set for a brilliant conclusion to what’s been an excellent season so far!

Simone Ashley Returns as Kate Bridgerton

In a massive update for fans of “Kanthony,” Netflix has inadvertently leaked the fact that Simone Ashley will return in Season 4 as Kate Bridgerton. While Jonathan Bailey (Anthony) has been listed as a series regular, fans have been desperate for news on the Viscountess. It appears she will be back to help guide the family—and perhaps Benedict—through the upcoming turmoil.

Plot Tease: What’s next for Benedict and Sophie?

When fate brings Benedict and Sophie back together in Part 2, Benedict wrestles between the reality of his affection for this intriguing maid and the fantasy of the Lady in Silver — unaware that they are the same person. Will Benedict’s inability to see these women as one in the same derail the undeniable spark between him and Sophie? And can love truly conquer anything — even a cross-class connection forbidden by society?
