John Luther is officially back on the streets of London. What’s on Netflix has obtained exclusive filming pictures and videos from the set of the highly anticipated sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun, which has officially kicked off production in the United Kingdom.
Following the massive success of the first Netflix film, which saw the disgraced detective take down a billionaire serial killer, Idris Elba has donned the iconic grey overcoat once again. Production is currently underway across various locations in the UK, and we have the first glimpse of the action. Still no word on an official title, although one floating around is Luther: The Last Line.
What Do the New Filming Pictures Reveal?
The footage and images obtained by What’s on Netflix show a gritty, high-octane production. As previously confirmed, “Luther returns to investigate savage random killings in London while dodging threats from every direction – can he stop the murders when everyone wants him dead?”

Unlike the snowy, expansive landscapes of Iceland seen at the end of the first film, this sequel appears to be leaning heavily back into the claustrophobic, rain-slicked streets of London and the surrounding industrial areas of the UK.
The new shots we’ve got show detective John Luther just outside St. Paul’s Cathedral in Central London running away from an exploding car. Numerous stunt doubles can be seen in the snaps below, and fake rain was added to make it truly British.
Production got underway with eyewitness and local reporting from London. Now, on February 18th, crews had been spotted in Northern London, specifically near and around Parkland Walk and Crouch End. They were specifically filming a bike chase segment during a night shoot. Production is expected to wrap this May, and Idris Elba is also working on a new documentary with King Charles, due out on Netflix later in 2026.

Who is involved in the Luther Sequel?
While Netflix has not yet released a full cast list, we know the core “Luther” team is back in action:
- Idris Elba returns as John Luther. Elba has previously teased that this film would be “even darker” than the last.
- Neil Cross, the creator and writer of the original series, has penned the script for this installment.
- Jamie Payne is expected to return to the director’s chair, having successfully transitioned the franchise from TV to film with The Fallen Sun.
The remainder of the cast, confirmed so far, includes Ruth Wilson returning as Alice Morgan, Anya Chalotra (The Witcher), Stephen Dillane (The Hours), Kyle Soller (Andor), Ian Hard (Harry Potter), Niamh Algar (Raised by Wolves), and Dermot Crowley as Schenk.
When will the movie be on Netflix?
Given that filming has only just begun in early 2026, the post-production schedule for a high-budget action thriller like this is significant. We currently estimate that the ‘Luther’ sequel will arrive on Netflix in early to mid-2027.
